About our group:

The Slider (Recording Head) Lapping Development group located in Bloomington, MN identifies and develops improvements in recording head row bar lapping equipment and processes that meet future product roadmap requirements. More specifically, the final reader and writer heights as well as surface flatness and air bearing surface finish. The recording heads (sliders) are a critical component in magnetic hard disc drives. Seagate slider factories manufacture millions of sliders every day. This team supports the research and development builds that define future company success.

About the role - you will:

Seagate manufacturing site in Korat Thailand has hundreds of lapping systems. Our development site has a small number of lapping systems, and a variety of ideas and initiatives for improving performance and productivity on these systems. This internship will focus on taking one or more of these concepts from idea phase through design phase, experimental windowing phase, and conclude with improvement demonstrations / prototyping.



  • Ability to perform lab tests, analyze results, and develop reports on findings.
  • Document new procedures.
  • Must follow safety instructions and maintain a clean, safe work environment.

About you:

  • You are a self-motivated individual
  • Able to work in a collaborative, sometimes fast-paced, team environment
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to balance multiple demands
  • Willing and able to learn and apply project management skills, learn how to write engineering reports and presentations, and apply design of experiments

Your experience includes:

  • Prior experience working in a lab
  • Experience working with robotics or automated machinery
  • Coursework or experience relating to abrasive materials and/or fine abrasive lapping
  • Understanding of statistics and data analysis / DOE
  • Student pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in mechanical engineering or related mechanical science such as physics or materials science

Our Normandale campus spans two suburbs, Edina and Bloomington, and serves as the Recording Head development and manufacturing arm of Seagate. The estimated base wage range for this position is $22.00 - $43.00/hr. The individual base wage is based on work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Seagate offers comprehensive benefits to its eligible Interns, including, but not limited to, medical, dental, vision, and participation in the employee stock purchase plan. Seagate also offers Interns 12 paid holidays and a minimum of 48 hours of paid sick leave. The benefits for this position are based on a 24 to 40-hour-per-week schedule for a full calendar year and may differ depending on work location and tenure with the Company.
