Position Summary Information
Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's Degree
- Two or more years of successful experience in sales or major gifts fundraising
- Ability to understand the needs and interests of potential donors and donors in order to develop relationships between them and colleges or areas
- Interest in all aspects of education and a dedication to promoting Appalachian's fundraising priorities through developing excellent relationships with faculty, senior leaders, trustees, alumni, volunteers, and the advancement office team
- One to two years of experience in making cold calls as well as the ability to develop cultivation and solicitation strategies is beneficial
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated record of completing assignments
- A willingness to travel and to work evenings and weekends
- Ability to manage competing priorities consulting with supervisor as necessary and meet tight deadlines
- Demonstrated working knowledge of App State, or other higher-ed universities, and a preference for working in a college of business
- Ability to identify fundraising opportunities that support multiple goals with a single source of funding
- Ability to work across disciplines in collaborative teams

Preferred Qualifications |
The position requires the ability to prepare written proposals to solicit prospects for gifts in support of the University to promote visionary gift opportunities.
The ability to work collaboratively with fundraising colleagues in central development and constituent schools and units is necessary.
Occasional travel is a priority in this position requiring flexibility in work hours to include evenings and weekends and extensive travel as needed to accomplish objectives and satisfy goals. |
Essential Duties and Responsibilities |
- Under supervision, assist in identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding alumni, parents, and friends of the institution capable of making gifts of $1,000 or more.
- Secure new, renewed, and increased funding from individuals through online giving, direct mail and digital campaigns, special events, and direct proposals
- Manage the new affinity giving programs in the Walker College of Business to grow donations and the donor base to these areas.
- Attend community events and speaking engagements on behalf of Appalachian State University and the Walker College of Business
- Plan and execute steps for donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship for annual donors giving unrestricted gifts to the Walker College Dean's Club
- Liaise with the Walker College of Business and Advancement Communications team to design and manage a few direct mail pieces and digital giving strategies.
- Analyze direct mail/digital solicitation program results data to refine and increase ROI
- Work with University Advancement and the Walker College teams to refine strategy and grow participation for iBackApp Day and other giving campaigns
- Build and maintain positive relationships with individual donors, volunteers, and community stakeholders
- Assure accurate and timely contact report and proposal entry, plus provide monthly Dean's Club lists and guidance for renewed solicitations.
- Work with Executive Director of Development to establish goals for fiscal year
- Synchronize messaging across channels to ensure a continual and clear message from University Advancement
- Collaborate with University Annual Giving & University Advancement Communications to establish strong stewardship practices and an annual giving plan
- Work with University Communications to develop and manage consistent messaging to donors and prospects that aligns with solicitation and donor-specific stewardship communications
- Work effectively with the College of Business Advancement Team to identify new donors and build strategies for engaging and encouraging donors to give at higher levels
- Work collaboratively with administration, faculty, staff, volunteers, advisory board members, and other advancement staff as appropriate.
- As appropriate, refer donors and potential donors to other development staff members.
- Monthly contact reports, moves, and prospect management activities must be recorded.
