Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). One (1) year of full-time experience in an academic advising, counseling, or student services setting at the college or university level working with students. Highly proficient professional experience in: word processing, spreadsheet management, electronic messaging and internet applications.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in higher education, student affairs, social work, counseling or related discipline. Experience in academic advising, working with undergraduates. Experience working with an engineering student population and/or knowledge of engineering disciplines. Experience coordinating programs and/or events. Experience planning or participating in new student orientation.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Undergraduate Student Office (USO) in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) supports approximately 3,900 undergraduate students in professional, degree granting programs. Staff in the USO are trained in the nuances and specialized knowledge needed to advise students in these programs. Reporting to the Senior Assistant Dean and Director of Student Services in the CEAS, the incumbent is responsible for: providing continuous comprehensive academic advising to undergraduate CEAS students with a focus on one of the Departments within the CEAS from matriculation to graduation. The incumbent will be a key member of a professional team that will coordinate the efforts of faculty, staff and student constituents.

The successful incumbent will have excellent interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.



  • Advising:

    • Provide high quality, proactive academic advising to undergraduates in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (approximately 3,900 students), adhering to local policies and procedures, but also to the specialized and complex New York State laws that govern professional licensing programs. Such advising will occur in individual and group settings on an ongoing basis, and will include regular communication about courses, majors, degree requirements, and policies/procedures. Develop advising strategies, outreach, tracking and retention efforts toward College/institutional goals. Evaluate student record/degree audit each semester and utilize data and analytics to identify areas for intervention. Update advising materials (i.e. requirement checklists, departmental websites, etc.) Assist in the evaluation of applications for majors/minors and specializations.


  • Program Coordination:

    • Assist with reviewing and processing applications for the CS Honors and Accelerated BS/MS program. In collaboration with CSE Undergraduate Program Coordinator, closely monitor course enrollment and provide recommendations to resolve scheduling/enrollment issues. Review, recommend and provide support in selecting scholarship recipients for departmental specific scholarships.


  • Orientation:

    • Participate in transfer and freshman new student orientations. Provide course recommendations for and conduct advising at orientation. Process transfer course/credit evaluations.


  • CEAS Strategic Initiatives:

    • Develop and implement tutorials, how-to guides and communications to ensure students are familiar with campus and departmental deadlines, policies and procedures and requirements.


  • New Student Seminar Instruction:

    • Provide instruction engineering section of new student seminars each term. Supervise, train and evaluate an Academic Peer Advisor who will serve as a teaching assistant.


  • CEAS and University-wide Initiatives:

    • Plan and execute CSE departmental events specific to the Computer Science Honors Program and BS/MS that promotes a sense of community within the programs. Participate in CEAS convocation, Engineering Ball/Hall of Fame and other college events. Participate in major/minor events and other campus advising events. Initiate, plan and execute College-wide events including Opening Week and other College traditions. Includes some nights and weekends.


  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission



Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.

Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
