Summary

Responsible for performing routine animal care and related duties at the Garland Animal Services' Adoption Center and animal shelter including medical evaluations, behavior evaluation, cleaning and maintaining kennel areas, socializing with adoptable animals and assisting citizens interested in adoption. Performs medical treatments, diagnostic tests, assists in surgery and providing daily routine care for animals in medical holding.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducting departmental medical evaluations for pets placed in adoption program

  • Assist in overseeing shelter medical services operations, including, but not limited to animal medical treatments, diagnostic testing, daily shelter surgeries, surgery appointments, vet check rounds, as well as the general care of animals under veterinary care.

  • Maintain proper inventory level of food, cleaning and other supplies.

  • Notify Supervisor when restocking items from shelter is needed.

  • Perform kennel cleaning and other related housekeeping duties.

  • Maintain assigned equipment and supplies and report any problems or needed repairs to Shelter Manager.

  • Works under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian employed by the City of Garland.

  • Assist with other shelter duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) equivalent

  • Customer service experience

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/ Experience:

  • Experience with animals

  • Experience with customer service

  • Experience handling cash

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Basic skill operating a computer and office equipment

  • Ability to handle animals over 25 pounds

  • Ability to assist guest with adoption process

  • Ability to thoroughly clean

  • Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions.

  • Ability to rapidly and accurately process information.

Licenses and Certifications

Valid State of Texas Class C driver's license

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

The work is performed in an animal shelter surrounding. Position requires workers to walk or stand for periods oat a time; lift and carry over 25 pounds; bend, reach, hold, grasp and turn objects; and use fingers to operate computer or typewriter keyboards. The work requires the ability to speech normally and to use normal or aided vision and hearing. Work is subject to working on weekends and holidays. Employee may have to work outside in a variety of weather conditions.
