Description

Learn about every aspect of directing a railroad yard and yard crew for one of North America's most established railroad companies. As a Yardmaster Trainee for Union Pacific, you'll be responsible for and directly supervise yard crews, clerks and other employees working in the yard. You'll also help direct the safe, prompt and regular movement of freight cars and ensure the proper makeup of trains, so they are equipped to safely and efficiently transport goods to customers across the country.

Accountabilities
  • Review all train orders and authorities with relieving yardmasters
  • Perform administrative duties such as: supporting compliance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and operating rules; documenting train and freight car movements within the yard; reporting alleged violations of rules;entering terminal data into the computer for reporting; and other duties as
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and/or customers, and effectively handle conflict situations
  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
  • Ensure the safety and security of the yard and all yard personnel
  • Implement daily yard plan, monitor train movements against time schedules and limits, and ensure terminal production goals are met
  • Coordinate responses to unplanned events and emergency situations
  • Communicate information, instructions and requirements to train crews and other personnel
Qualifications - Required
  • Basic computer skills
  • Basic keyboarding skills
  • Basic mathematic skills
  • Strong organization AND prioritization skills
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Experience making quick and accurate visual inspections at near and far distances
  • Valid driver's license
  • Experience reading and understanding instructions (examples may include: operating and safety rules, bulletins, special instructions, and federal regulatory documents)
Qualifications - Preferred
  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent level of education
  • A high school diploma or a Graduate Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • Proven experience working in logistics or a related field
  • Ability to work different shifts, including overtime, holidays, and weekends
  • Familiarity with working in confined spaces
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Successful completion of a specialized railroad-focused program or course
  • Prior experience in a supervisory role
  • Strong background in the railroad industry
  • Previous work experience as a Union Pacific Yardmaster or Yardmaster trainee

Work Conditions
  • Minimum age requirement is 18 years or older.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring company sponsorship.
  • Trainees do not have a guaranteed placement as a yardmaster. Selection for a regular position depends on availability and the seniority system.
  • No relocation assistance will be provided.
  • Applicants should only apply to locations where they are willing and prepared to live and work.
  • Agree to be present at the work station continuously, with brief, occasional breaks allowed.
  • Yardmaster trainees will receive 75% of the starting wage during their training period. The salary mentioned in this job listing represents the starting wage.
  • Must be willing and capable of working around large equipment such as railcars, locomotives, and cranes.
  • Willingness to adhere to safe work practices.
  • Agree to wear personal protective equipment as required by the company, including safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection.
