Position Summary

Under the direction of the Medical Director (or designee) provides patient and/or donor services* including obtaining medical histories and conducting physical examinations, writing orders and assisting in oversight of patients receiving apheresis or cell collection procedures. Also coordinates patient care for Therapeutic Services and possibly donor care for the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP). Additional activities may include assisting in coordination of research, and provides education related to the procedure the patient/donor is undergoing to patients, donors, their families, health care practitioners and the public. This position is expected to perform most responsibilities independent of direct supervision. *Scope/limitations of patient services and professional practice, including delegated "medical" acts and prescribing, as well as level of physician supervision for Registered Nurses and Advanced Practice Nurse Prescribers are defined by state law.

Responsibilities

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES * Provides and documents medical and apheresis care to patients, implementing the treatment plan developed by the professional treatment team, and acting as a consultant to hospital inpatient and outpatient medical providers while patients are being cared for at community hospitals and outreach clinics as well as in Versiti blood centers. * Oversees apheresis and cell therapy procedures. * Provides donor information sessions and chart reviews for the NMDP program, as needed. * Adheres to all regulatory and quality requirements, as applicable. * Collaborates with the physicians, nurses and ancillary staff for patient care. * Takes medical histories, assists in oversight of treatments and medications for patients with various disorders under the supervision of the Medical Director or other Versiti physicians. * Obtains consent from patients and/or donors prior to procedures. * For apheresis and cell therapy procedures and based on evaluation, formulates and documents a plan of care in conjunction with the collaborating physician. * Writes orders for apheresis and cell therapy procedures where credentialed. * May share night and weekend call with Transfusion Medicine physicians. * Performs procedures according to approved protocols or physician collaboration as applicable by state. * Initiates appropriate patient referrals * Evaluates outcomes and revises a plan of care in conjunction with protocols or collaborating physician. * Functions as a primary educator of patients and families by providing information regarding pathophysiology and treatment and responding to patients' and families' questions and concerns.
  • GENERAL DUTIES * Functions as part of a comprehensive team, provides cross coverage for other team members, and provides assistance with process development, implementation of new programs and other initiatives, and other projects/duties as assigned. * Provides assistance to Therapeutic Services nurses and other staff when applicable and to support patient and/or donor care. * Possesses and demonstrates outstanding leadership skills to be able to mentor and lead staff as well as motivate disparate groups around quality improvement initiatives. * Acts as a liaison between the patient, his family, the physicians and other members of the treatment center, as well as acting as a resource to the patient's primary care physician and other health care providers involved in the patient's care. * Obtains Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) training certification to include Good Clinical Practice which will enable participation of enrolling our patients into research studies for which they qualify. * Assists as needed in the coordination of research and prevention activities involving the patient population, including coordinating laboratory studies and data compilation/maintenance, as well as educating patients and families regarding the purpose of the research. * Complete any essential research trial-specific training, assist with clinical trials in thrombosis and hemostasis and perform research assessments as needed and applicable by state. * Assists in maintaining and updating department SOPs. * Maintains current knowledge base and skills through participation in continuing education, professional meetings, ASFA membership as applicable, conferences, and reviewing current literature. * Demonstrates the ability to work proactively and collaboratively with people at all levels within our organization.

Qualifications

Education

  • Master's Degree in Nursing (appropriate education and/or experience may be substituted on equivalent basis) required
  • PhD in Nursing (appropriate education and/or experience may be substituted on equivalent basis) required

Experience

  • 1-3 years clinical experience required
  • Experience in triaging, evaluating and treating basic medical conditions required
  • Experience with apheresis preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to be credentialed at all applicable health care facilities
  • Excellent organizational ability with attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently under minimum supervision as well as to function as a productive team member
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and teaching skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of computer databases and word processing applications
  • Venipuncture skills preferred
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal and teamwork skills and has ability to work with diverse constituencies throughout Versiti and partnering organizations.
  • Valid Wisconsin or Michigan driver's license, depending on state location

Licenses and Certifications

  • NPC - Certified Nurse Practitioner required
  • PA - Physician Assistant required
  • APNP - Advanced Practice NP certificate granted by the Wisconsin or Michigan Board of Nursing if applicable required
  • Current Wisconsin or Michigan Registered Nurse licensure required, as applicable required
  • CPR certification required
