Structural Engineer - Waterfront & Inspection - Entry Level

Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex waterfront infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. Our Oakland, CA office is actively searching for an entry-level Engineer with Structural focus and interest in waterfront/marine engineering as well as providing inspection services and field related activities. This position will be available commencing summer 2025. As the successful new hire, you will perform planning and design for waterfront structures projects, including heavy lift cargo ports, marine terminals, vessel mooring and berthing structures, bulkheads, marinas and bridge protection structures. You will also learn to perform structural assessments in the field and may be invited to participate in our inspection and rehabilitation team as a Certified Engineer Diver. As an Engineer Diver, you would be part of a team that evaluates marine structures and bridges through above and underwater engineering inspections, follow-on report preparation and development of structural repair designs. You would utilize modern workflows that include field tablets, nondestructive testing and evaluation, marine mapping and imaging, analysis and modeling tools.

Being an ADCI certified Engineer Diver requires physical conditioning and strength. It also requires an additional 12 weeks of off-site intense training (company paid). The ideal candidate for this position will have a proven passion for the water including significant experience with water-based activities such as PADI scuba certified diving, free diving, swimming, boating, surfing, etc. with a strong interest in working outdoors and perhaps proven mechanical, equipment repair or building skills.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Analysis, design, inspection of waterfront structures, asset management, and other maritime projects
  • Structural analysis and design with timber, steel, concrete and composite materials
  • Develop plans, specifications, and inspection reports as needed
  • Help resolve design problems that may include performing field investigation or inspections, detailed design work, and detailed checking of design computations done by others, or general coordination of specific design aspects into a project
  • Calculate construction quantity estimates
  • Work closely with other architects, engineers, scientists, project managers, etc. on multi-discipline projects
  • Conduct site investigations of marine structures, bridges, etc.
  • Analyze deteriorated components of marine structures to assess load capacity
  • Review shop drawings and technical submittals for construction support services
  • Perform construction site inspections and prepare inspection reports

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with Structural coursework required
  • Entry to 1 year of structural design or related heavy civil or marine infrastructure field experience. For entry-level applicants, related internship experience is required
  • EIT required
  • Proven interest/experience in water-based activities including but not limited to: PADI scuba certified diving, free diving, boating, swimming, surfing, etc. as well as mechanical, equipment repair or building skills
  • Employee obtaining PADI scuba diving certification in advance of going to dive school is required
  • Valid driver's license in good standing
  • Boater Safety Card preferred
  • Selected candidate must consent to and a pass a post-offer/pre-employment drug screening
  • Possession of or eligibility to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Preferred experience using:
    • SAP2000 or STAAD
    • LPile
    • AutoCAD
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Base salary range:

$37.00 to $43.00 hour based on years of experience, level of education obtained, professional registration, and meeting required qualification in job description. In addition to salary, Moffatt & Nichol also offers generous rope access and dive pay along with a personal equipment reimbursement program.

Base salary range only applicable for candidates who will be hired and working in the California, market.

Working conditions:

The incumbent works in both the office and field:

  • Office work requires ongoing design work requiring focus
  • Field work requires close proximity to (or diving in) water and exposure to extreme elements
  • Must be able to move among a variety of simultaneous priorities
  • Some extended days, evenings, and weekend work requirements

Physical requirements:

This role requires the incumbent to be in excellent physical condition:

  • ADCI (or equivalent) diving requires specific physical conditioning and strength
  • Field work requires incumbent to carry diving and inspection equipment over unpaved, rural, and unmarked terrain
  • The incumbent must be able to lift, carry, climb, and navigate in a small boat
