What Do We Do?

Business Unit: Information Technology - Athens Site

We automate manufacturing processes at the Athens, Alabama facility leveraging technology to drive performance to higher levels. Our goal is to continuously improve IT processes to help manufacturing produce specialty alloys consistently while eliminating waste.

Ongoing Projects

  • Developing enhancements for our Manufacturing and Execution System (MES) and Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs).
  • Collaboration with operational managers and operators to understand business processes that we can in turn automate or streamline.
  • Performing day-to-day application/system support to operations.
  • Planning, testing, and performing upgrades and modernization of existing plant systems.
  • Digitization of data and assisting with the generation of data pipelines that can assist operations with data analysis.
  • Developing reports and other tools that operations can leverage to get the data they need to make faster, data-informed business decisions.

Your Role as an Intern

You will be a part of a dynamic team, supporting the following tasks:

We have quite a few research and development type projects currently available at the Athens location including but not limited to:

Developing tools/writing custom applications to enhance plant operations productivity.
- Specifically looking to target the development of applications/tools to help mobile equipment operator efficiency by designing tablet or assisted reality tools to perform job tasks

Manufacturing and Execution System (MES) Development projects including user interface design and mobility using Microsoft .NET technology.

Writing custom queries, building SQL Server reports, and helping analyze data for items such as daily operations metrics, equipment utilization, or other plant provided development request.

Documenting requirements, writing how-to guides, developing training videos, and presenting work to stakeholders.

What Do We Require?

You must be:

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program majoring in Computer Science, Data Science & Analytics, Software Engineering or Artificial Intelligence
  • Candidates should have exposure to SGL Server, C#, .NET, PowerShell, Python or similar programming languages. Candidates should also be proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ideal candidates will possess the following characteristics: Active listener, good oral/written communication, attention to detail, organized, customer focused, creative thinker, honesty, self-motivated, team-player and teachable.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Willing and able to work on-site at our Athens, AL location.
  • Applicants MUST be US Citizens or Green Card Holders due to Carpenter's government contracts.

Pay Range

Hourly rates are based on: 1 - Program of study; 2 - Degree type (i.e., Bachelor's); 3 - Progression in degree (i.e., 1st year, 2nd year, etc.). The range for this position is $22.00 - $25.00 per hour.

Commuting/Housing Assistance (If Eligible)

Interns who must commute to work from outside the immediate Athens, AL area (over 50 miles one-way), will be paid a one-time lump sum payment of $2,400 (less applicable taxes) as excessive commute allowance. Interns who choose to temporarily relocate from outside the immediate Athens, AL area (moving over 50 miles one-way), will be paid a one-time lump sum payment of $4,800 (less applicable taxes) as a housing allowance. If applicable, this payment would be made during the first payroll cycle, which would be three or four weeks following the internship start date.
