The Role As a Vessel Engineer, you maintain the heart of the vessel. You'll ensure all vessel machinery, equipment and systems are run, maintained and repaired in a safe and effective way. You'll also ensure all Engineering Department personnel follow our company operational guidelines and planned maintenance programs. It's a seasonal position - four to six months. As leaders in our industry, we take crew comfort seriously, and you can always expect to work on and with top-notch equipment. Responsibilities of a Vessel Engineer: You'll maintain all machinery and systems, including main propulsion, auxiliary power generation, ancillary, deck and cargo handling; ensuring proper operations of control, monitoring, and alarm components and systems. You'll maintain a safe work environment on the vessel, implementing company policies and procedures, and general maritime industry standards wherever applicable. In Alaska, you're working in remote geography and will need to perform safe and effective repairs with limited resources and outside support while under tight time constraints. You'll notify the Captain and Port Engineer of any abnormal changes in the status of machinery operation and troubleshoot machinery malfunctions, effectively communicating with the Captain, Port Engineer, and designated shoreside support staff and vendors to quickly and efficiently diagnose and repair vessel machinery and systems. During planned and emergency maintenance and repairs, you'll work as assigned by the Port Engineer for the safe and effective management of shipyard personnel and other vendors. You'll check and maintain fuel/fluid levels in all tanks within the vessel, take monthly oil samples for analysis and be responsible for vessel bunkering operations, following established fueling procedures. You'll maintain adequate inventory levels of critical spares and general vessel parts. You'll lead and train junior engineering staff in company policies, vessel operations, equipment repair, and preventative maintenance procedures. Qualifications: * Minimum of a QMED (Engineer License preferred). * Valid USCG Merchant Mariner Document, or Merchant Mariner Credential, STCW, PIC, HAZWOPER. * Valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). * Valid driver's license. * High School Diploma or equivalent. * Legal approval to work in the United States. Experience and Skills: * Minimum of five years of previous experience during the last 15 years as a Marine Engineer (we prefer you to have spent at least three of those years as a Chief Engineer). * Physically fit enough to: climb aboard tugs and barges, ascend and descend ladders and balance while aboard vessels in a seaway; kneel, stoop, use stairs, reach overhead, and stand for long periods. * Comfortable with heights or narrow walkways. * Skilled when it comes to equipment, namely what equipment is best suited to handle the job at hand. * You see weekends, nights, and holidays as part of the job and aren't bothered by extreme weather conditions like rain, ice, snow, heat, and wind.
