Job Summary: The Charge Nurse-PeriAnesthesia, exhibits advanced knowledge of procedural and perianesthesia nursing. Works collaboratively with the manager and/or director to provide clinical supervision of a team of licensed and unlicensed staff during an assigned shift in a Magnet Recognized large tertiary academic medical center with level one trauma designation, ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) receiving center designation, Comprehensive Stroke Center and Chest Pain Center accreditation. Utilizes skilled discretion and independent judgment to coordinate daily shift operations based on scheduled procedures and associated perianesthesia methods, needs of the patient population served, and established professional practice model (Duffy's Quality-Caring Model). Functions in a skills mix environment and displays flexibility and advanced critical thinking skills to effectively supervise and delegate tasks to a team of licensed and unlicensed staff who provide direct and indirect patient care during the shift. Makes staff assignments in accordance with experience, competency and ability to provide safe patient care for all levels of patient acuity ranging from basic to highly critical and complex. Understands and manages productivity for the shift and follows staffing ratios as applicable. Manages staffing emergencies and approves overtime as needed. Adeptly resets priorities and assigns and re-assigns staff and workloads to provide uninterrupted, cost effective patient care and patient flow with optimum productivity. Flexes staff up or down as appropriate. Provides direct patient care and takes full or partial patient care list when needed. Facilitates uninterrupted patient flow through the various phases of procedures and peri-anesthesia. Promotes the empowerment of the nursing profession and excels in implementing new knowledge, innovations and improvements in practice to enhance the patient experience and clinical outcomes. Facilitates a positive environment and provides hands-on guidance to engage staff in adopting a care delivery model of accountability, empowerment, and excellence in practice. Contributes to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population. Performs other duties as needed.
