JOB SUMMARY :
As a member of the Knowledge Engineering team, the Knowledge Engineer supports the creation and integration of WebMD Ignite's foundational information architectures, including taxonomies and ontologies. The Knowledge Engineer manages WebMD Ignite taxonomies and metadata schemas, collaborates on new ways to group and organize health education content, and supports search in WebMD Ignite products and solutions. This role is placed in product management but works closely with content teams to advise on existing semantic models, develop new ones, and drive implementation of metadata in WebMD Ignite's systems and products. The Knowledge Engineer also partners with members of the Product Technology group to support administration of our taxonomy and ontology management system, develop integration points between our ontology management application and other systems, and extract and transform data into RDF and other formats. The person in this role is a team player, an excellent communicator, and is passionate about supporting our mission to empower patients and consumers along their healthcare journey.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
  • Creates, manages, and integrates WebMD Ignite information models such as taxonomies and ontologies, and helps operationalize these models for use in WebMD Ignite products and solutions.
  • Ensures that information structures and systems support current and future product and content needs. This entails working closely with content strategists, product managers, clinicians, integration engineers, software developers, and clients.
  • Serves on cross-functional teams across the organization as a SME and liaison who provides expertise in applying the KE team's metadata and taxonomies.
  • Partners with product designers and user experience researchers to test and implement information structures in user interfaces.
  • Acts as a power user and backup administrator for WebMD Ignite's taxonomy and ontology management system. Works closely with system administrator and KE team members to coordinate software updates, optimize performance, maintain and clean up data, build and implement new features, and troubleshoot application errors.
  • Actively collaborates with engineering teams on search improvement efforts, adjusting search product configurations, developing search scenarios for various products, and analyzing and gaining insight from search testing and relevancy scoring.
  • Partners with members of the Product Engineering team to create and maintain integration points with our ontology management systems, support data enrichment projects to unify the UMLS and WebMD Ignite's internal data structures, extract and transform data into RDF and other formats, and other projects as needed.Leads special projects, including taxonomy audits, custom SPARQL/GraphQL reports, data cleanup and optimization projects, data mapping and enrichment, and medical code set integration.
  • Helps to identify, assess, pilot, and implement data- and digital asset-related tooling (such as CMS and DAM systems) across the organization
  • Helps WebMD Ignite investigate and implement new technologies such as knowledge graphs and machine learning techniques for diverse applications, which may include natural language processing, image recognition, document classification, extraction, and/or asset similarity.
  • Documents best practices for managing taxonomies and metadata.
  • Trains and mentors KE team members and others in the organization on taxonomy/ontology engineering and information modeling.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's in Information Science, Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, or related field
  • 2+ years experience working in taxonomy/ontology engineering and semantic modeling.
  • Relevant experience in the healthcare industry is a plus.
  • In-depth understanding of semantic web standards and technologies including RDF, OWL, SKOS, SPARQL, GraphQL, and SHACL.
  • Experience administering a taxonomy management system, such as TopBraid EDG.
  • Ability to write complex queries in SPARQL, GraphQL, and/or SQL.
  • Proficiency in Python, C++, Java, or another programming language is a significant plus.
  • Direct knowledge of the UMLS and associated taxonomies such as SNOMEDCT, ICD-10, RxNorm, CPT, and LOINC is a significant plus.
  • Knowledge of designing and validating metadata models and frameworks for varied data and content types
  • Experience working with content and domain experts to gather requirements is a plus
  • Knowledge in agile process frameworks like Kanban and Scrum is an advantage
  • Demonstrates ability to construct and design ontologies that support knowledge graph deployment preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
  • Very strong social and communication skills - ability to present ideas clearly and with confidence across diverse settings and groups in the organization
