The Department of Music and Visual Arts at Elizabeth City State University ( ECSU) provides comprehensive and dynamic education in creative disciplines, fostering an environment where students can excel in the areas of music, visual arts, and digital media. The department's mission is to develop skilled, knowledgeable, and versatile artists, musicians, and digital media specialists who can effectively communicate, create, and collaborate in a diverse, technology-driven world.
The Department of Music and Visual Arts at Elizabeth City State University invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track faculty position as Endowed Distinguished Professor in Graphic Design with an Emphasis on Art History. The successful candidate will develop and deliver three courses per semester in art history, graphic design, and related subjects, contributing to a dynamic and interdisciplinary curriculum.
Description of Work
The School of Humanities and Social Sciences consist of three departments: English, History, and Interdisciplinary Studies, Music and Visual Arts, and Social Sciences. Each department seeks to strengthen students' critical thinking and analysis, problem - solving capabilities, communication skills, and interpretive insights, all of which are essential for effective performance in their pre-professional and professional endeavors and careers.
Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position
* Demonstrated teaching and professional expertise in graphic design, with an emphasis on art history, as evidenced by a portfolio or scholarly publications.
* Ability to teach art history courses, including but not limited to, art appreciation, modern art, and the history of design.
* Proficiency in design and imaging software such as Adobe Creative Suite.
* A strong commitment to ongoing professional artistic growth and development in both art historical and design practices.
* Experience in digital modalities such as UI/UX, animation, or web-based design is a plus.
* A demonstrated ability to integrate historical perspectives with contemporary design challenges.
Minimum Training and Experience
Minimum Training and Experience
An earned terminal degree in Art History, Graphic Design, or a related field.
A record of research, publication, or creative work that demonstrates a strong commitment to art history and visual arts.
Proven excellence in teaching and mentorship in a university setting.

Management Preferences
Expertise in teaching both foundational graphic design and art history courses.
A strong portfolio of creative or scholarly work that bridges graphic design and art history.
Experience in curating exhibitions or leading research projects in art history or visual arts.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
