Organizational Unit Overview
Facilities Services is a unit in Campus Operations Division, which is a part of a broad division of Administration and Finance that includes all aspects of facilities management at East Carolina University. East Carolina University is the third largest university in the University of North Carolina system with approximately 28,000 FTS and a staff of over 6,000. The university is comprised of more than 7 million square feet of facilities located on approximately 1400 acres with physical assets in excess of $1.5 billion. This includes the Main, Health Sciences, and West Research Campuses, and satellite locations throughout North Carolina associated with university programs. Facilities Services has an annual budget in excess of $30 million and employs approximately 500 FTE. Major functions include facilities maintenance and housekeeping services.
Facilities Services' primary purpose is to plan and perform corrective and preventive maintenance functions on all building structures and equipment and utility infrastructure. Corrective maintenance returns equipment to optimal design performance after failure or upon degradation from age, adverse operation conditions, etc. Preventive maintenance minimizes equipment failures and reduces corrective maintenance.
Job Duties
This position serves as the Lead Worker in the HVAC Shop for Main Campus, assists the shop supervisor in daily duties and, in the supervisor's absence, performs some supervisory duties. Provides assignments and work orders for shop staff and tracks them as needed. Assists other shop staff with technical advice, acts as a crew leader as needed, reviews Kronos time tracking for compliance, and participates on interview committees for job candidates. Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, providing training to new mechanics, performing modifications to existing air-conditioning systems, reviewing plans and specifications for new construction assuring conformance to plans and specifications, and reviewing work of contractors to determine compatibility with existing equipment of acceptability of design. This position performs the full range of advanced work duties in the HVACR trade i.e., maintain, troubleshoot, repair and replace the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment on all campus buildings. He/ She has primary responsibility for installation, modification, adjustment, troubleshooting, and repair of HVACR systems. Additionally, this position is responsible for understanding pneumatics on legacy HVAC systems, designing modifications to existing air-conditioning systems to achieve more uniform heating and cooling or energy conservation. These systems consist of computer-operated hardware with remote processors, and field devices, interconnected to provide transfer of information and remote operation and control of a large number of components, i.e., valves, dampers, VAV boxes, air compressors, etc. The position also services equipment such as solid-state motor starters, variable-speed drives and electronic controls. Extensive walking, climbing, and lifting will be required. Response to emergencies or call backs will be required as part of a rotating on-call assignment or as otherwise assigned. This is also an essential position in regard to adverse weather response. Operates ECU vehicles.
Minimum Education/Experience
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education


  • EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification preferred. Experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of air conditioning equipment, chillers, cooling towers, chilled water distribution, air handling equipment, and control systems. Ability to interpret blueprints, equipment installation instructions, and reference manuals. Computer, electrical, electronic, variable speed drive and materials procurement experience is desired.
  • Previous experience as a crew leader
  • Previous HVAC and/or supervisory training

License or Certification required by the Department
