University Printing & Graphics is a self-supporting auxiliary established to provide quality printing and graphic services to the University community in an efficient and economical manner. It is one of the largest of the University of North Carolina's printing operations with a current annual budget of 2.3 million dollars. In addition to printing capabilities ranging from simple forms to four-color process catalogs and magazines, University Printing & Graphics offers presort and bulk mailing services as well as high-volume copying capabilities and a campus-wide copier management program through its subsidiary,
ECU Copier Services. |
Job Duties |
Job Duties Job layout and design: spec type, create art and graphics (logos, illustrations, custom lettering, etc.), formulate color breaks, etc. Place photos, images, art and/or graphics that may merge with text; manipulate art and visuals for optimum reproduction including visual elements imported from files. Electronically or manually enter and format text into the Macintosh system including occasional conversion from PC programs, troubleshooting customer-produced files as required. Proofread/correct type and adjust graphics prior to preparing proof copy. Create proofs to be submitted to customer for approval. Correct file and adjust graphics as necessary (including color separating, arranging printer spreads, setting knockouts and traps, etc.,) prior to final output.
This position must provide organization of the workload and assignment of employee and physical resources to accomplish the production plan; organization and effective scheduling of Design & Imaging jobs to meet production schedules; planning for effective and appropriate utilization of cost-center overtime to accomplish delivery commitments; development of appropriate and commercially-competitive productivity standards for all cost centers and operations; and providing sufficient supervision to effect cost-containment and routine adherence to established productivity levels.
Routine responsibilities also include planning for employee training in new methods and technologies; cross-training employees to provide broader depth of skills within the department; employee evaluation and performance appraisals. The Design & Imaging Manager is responsible for the enforcement of policies relating to work standards such as work hours, attendance, use of leave, leave schedules, dress code, safety procedures, etc., and for reporting infractions to the Director. The Design &Imaging Manager also reviews quality through various checks and measurements at each step of production.
Review of individual and unit's accomplishments occurs daily using productivity and customer satisfaction as a guide. A review is also made of production samples for each job. The Design & Imaging Manager assists in the establishment of new personnel positions using current State/University procedures and submits recommendations to the Director for approval. The Design & Imaging Manager recruits and interviews for vacant positions following
EEO guidelines and procedures, and provides significant input into hiring decisions. The Design & Imaging Manager provides the Director with recommendations regarding disciplinary actions.

Minimum Education/Experience |
High school diploma or equivalency and two years of visual/graphic arts experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. |

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education |
- Knowledge of all areas of design, printing and bindery production management.
- Experience in the desktop publishing/design area of a commercial printing company, newspaper, advertising/public relations firm, or in-plant printing operation.
- Supervisory experience, preferably management experience in a printing production environment of similar or slightly smaller size is desired.
- Understanding of all technical and operational processes, current printing production technology, industry trends and growth areas, and the continuing impact of technological advances on those trends.
- Ability to utilize University Printing & Graphics' state-of-the-art Management Information System, the Macintosh system, and the hardware and software used in desktop publishing in a productive manner.
- Ability to comprehend complex sentence structure, punctuation, and the principles of typography.
- Understand written and verbal instructions such as equipment/software manuals, proofreader's markings, directions for mixing chemicals, and other technical publications. Good communication skills.
- Previous attendance at seminars and/or training sessions in the use of graphics-related software would also be of great value in this position.
