Primary Function of Organizational Unit |
The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.
Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. To operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed. |
Job Duties |
This position is located in the School of Dental Medicine at Ross Hall in Greenville, NC and is responsible for handling all aspects of insurance. This includes setting up insurance information in the school's Dental Management Software Program, axiUm and maintenance of dental insurance coverage templates, claim edits, insurance denials and insurance follow-up. This position must be knowledgeable regarding all areas of dental patient accounts including registration, insurance processing, claims and payment processing, write-offs, and adjustments. This position will be required to research and apply knowledge of all insurance rules and regulations for government-sponsored programs such as Medicaid and Medicare, and major third party insurance plans. This information will be critical for setting up coverage templates in axiUm and will be communicated to dental providers and coworkers to maximize reimbursement. This position will work directly with insurance carriers to obtain fee schedules and registration information that will be used to update insurance information so that patients can be accurately informed of what their portion of the treatment costs will be after insurance. The Insurance Specialist will make recommendations for updates to internal documents, registration forms, and billing forms as needed to meet the dynamics of change in the insurance industry. This position will prepare or review claims generated by the practice to ensure that all required data is accurately reported and to ensure prompt reimbursement for services provided, which contributes to the school's cash flow. This includes quality assurance, and compliance with current
ADA standards. This position will implement an internal audit system to make sure all services are billed, and to ensure that required pretreatment authorizations have been received and entered into the billing and treatment records. This position will review remittance advice documents and EOB's to ensure proper processing and payment of each claim. All data errors will be corrected and unprocessed or returned claims will be resubmitted. The Insurance Specialist will be expected to challenge inappropriately paid or denied claim items, and research and process appeals when necessary. The Insurance Specialist must understand the concept of Copays, Coinsurance, and Deductibles, and will be expected to explain complex insurance concepts and regulations to patients. This position must effectively communicate and respond to questions from providers, insurance companies, and other coworkers, and will perform patient eligibility checks and benefit status at each office visit. The Insurance Specialist will generate reports to determine which insurances have not responded to claims and need additional follow-up. This position will also monitor how efficient the SoDM is at filing claims, the amount of denied claims, or claims that were filed with incorrect information and will report these metrics to Management in an effort to point our weaknesses and make improvements. This position will analyze aging balances and report corrective actions needed including the transfer of unpaid insurance balances to the patient account for further collection. |
