Auto Lending

The Underwriter I within Presidential Bank's Indirect Auto Underwriting organization works with automotive dealerships and customers who apply for auto funding through dealerships. This role is responsible for reviewing these indirect contracts.

Status: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Assistant Vice President, Credit, Indirect Auto and Consumer Lending

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitors queue for new applications. Reviews applications for creditworthiness and contacts the dealer to capture the loan, if applicable.
  • Works under supervision or independently on relatively basic transactions. May have limited approval and/or exception authority. Performs or assists in preparation of offerings for specific transactions or in management of a portfolio and interacts with internal/external customers.
  • Using judgment to identify risks and mitigants, performs or assists in preparation of offerings and/or scorecards (e.g., risk ratings) by analyzing credit, collateral strength, and financial worthiness of loan/transaction parties. If relevant, performs ongoing credit risk management for assigned portfolio.
  • Contacts internal/external customers and other parties as appropriate to gather information, clarify inconsistent, incorrect, or missing information. May include relevant pre-approval and post-approval activities.
  • Performs or assists with the identification and/or confirmation of all external regulatory requirements. Ensures internal policies/procedures are followed.

    Makes recommendations on credit decisions or makes credit decisions directly, as appropriate.
  • Other projects or duties as assigned.

  • Information Capture - Knowledge of the processes and the ability to identify, capture and document relevant business information in an auditable, organized, understandable and easily retrievable manner.
  • Knowledge of Underwriting - Knowledge of the full spectrum of underwriting activities, practices, tools and considerations, and the ability to utilize these to manage the underwriting process.
  • Managing Multiple Priorities - Ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities, making effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation.
  • Office Support Tools - Knowledge of and ability to use office support tools available at the desktop (for example: word processing, e-mail, presentation software, and spreadsheets.)



Operational Functions - Knowledge of major functional processes and associated operating requirements; ability to apply this knowledge appropriately to diverse situations.

Desired Experience/Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum of two years of indirect auto underwriting experience required.
  • Familiar with the Auto Finance industry and consumer credit, trend analysis/analytics
  • Excellent sales, negotiation, problem solving, and analytical skills.
  • Must be an independent worker with strong time management skills.
  • Existing relationships with dealers in the Maryland, D.C., and Virginia areas preferred but not required.

  • Ability to accurately interpret sounds and associated meanings at a volume consistent with interpersonal conversation.
  • Regularly required to accurately perceive, distinguish and interpret information received visually and through audio; e.g., words, numbers and other data broadcasted aloud/viewed on a screen, as well as print and other media
  • Moderate sound as in business office with office machines, computers, and people traffic
  • Willingness to work on-site at stated location on the job opening
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and/or holiday as needed or scheduled
