Department Overview
As a security first organization, Technology Delivery Services (TDS) is part of the Information Technology Services (ITS) Department. The TDS teams include Information Security, Planning (architecture and PMO), Application Development, HR & Payroll Development, Infrastructure, and Client Services teams. We maintain an innovative, inclusive, and supportive work environment.

Position Summary
Reporting to the Deputy Chief Information Security Officer, the Security Operations Manager is responsible for monitoring, detecting, protecting, and maintaining the security of data, systems, and networks at UCOP. This role includes managing the UCOP Security Operations team, monitoring the UCOP infrastructure for malicious activity, developing and implementing security processes and procedures, managing vulnerabilities, and coordinating security incident response. The Security Operations Manager will work closely with other units at UCOP, including infrastructure and application development teams, desktop engineering, and the service desk, to identify vulnerabilities, implement best practices, and ensure the security of the UCOP computing environment.

Key Responsibilities

40% Responsible for supervising the daily activities of Security Operations security analysts who plan, design, develop, implement and maintain systems and programs to ensure the integrity, reliability and security of UCOP data and systems, and monitor and respond to threats to the UCOP computing environment. Additionally, this role provides mentoring to security personnel, drives continuous improvement, fosters an inclusive culture, and aligns the team with UCOP's mission and goals.

35% Implements highly complex and broad-scale security controls to prevent unauthorized access or changes to institutional information, information systems, and/or network infrastructure. Responsible for providing research, analysis and solutions to address attempted efforts to compromise security protocols. Proactively addresses the negative impact on Office of the President caused by theft, destruction, alteration or denial of access of information. Advises departments on security prevention, best practices and secure software.

10% Designs, configures and manages complex security systems including data loss prevention software, security information and event management systems, vulnerability scanners, and endpoint security agents. Administers security configurations to control access to information systems and networks, including on-premise and cloud environments.

10% Directs forensic investigations and addresses and produces reports in response to highly complex or broad-scale security incidents. Investigates security incidents and reports to management regarding the causes and effects. Applies advanced IT security concepts, compliance and regulatory requirements, and policies and procedures to respond to and appropriately escalate security incidents.

  • Min 8 years of related IT work experience.

  • Ability to lead a highly technical team.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills to work effectively with technical and non-technical personnel at various organizational levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, including writing and preparing technical and executive reports, briefings, and recommendations.
  • Ability to follow department processes and procedures.
  • Advanced experience using IT security systems and tools and using those tools to apply security controls in a complex environment.
  • Advanced experience analyzing, researching, and implementing threat intelligence and novel security concepts to improve overall security in a complex environment.
  • Experience in incident response and digital forensics, including data collection, examination, and analysis.
  • Experience with risk assessment, penetration test, and vendor risk management processes.

Education
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training

Preferred Qualifications

  • CISSP

The University of California, Office of the President, is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range shows the growth potential for this position and the pay scale is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This position is approved for fully remote from within California. California residents, or those willing to relocate to CA and who wish to work onsite, hybrid, or fully remote will be considered. Not eligible for Visa sponsorship or transfer. Some relocation assistance may be provided if relocating to CA from out of state.
