REGIONAL DISPATCHER II APPRENTICE

EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS

The City of Worcester seeks qualified applicants for the position of Regional Dispatcher II Apprentice in the Department of Emergency Communications. Under the general direction of the Senior Regional Dispatcher, the position is responsible for receiving and transmitting information accurately and rapidly via communications equipment for Police, Fire and EMS. All Police, Fire, and 9-1-1 calls are received and dispatched from a state-of the art emergency Communications Center. All the required training and necessary certifications for this position will be provided upon hire.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:



  • Operate a computer-aided-dispatch (CAD) system
  • Answer emergency and non-emergency telephone calls promptly and courteously
  • Obtain complete information from callers and make a rapid and accurate determination of the nature and priority of each call
  • Select and dispatch the most appropriate emergency response unit(s) in accordance with established user-agency policies and procedures
  • Monitor safety of field personnel and dispatches assistance as required
  • Special projects as assigned by supervisor and perform other related duties


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:



  • Ability to learn and understand Department policy, procedures, and equipment
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency; proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong organizational skills and flexibility; detail oriented with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality
  • Ability to complete projects with limited supervision
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with diverse and vulnerable populations
  • Ability to pass State 911 and APCO Certification
  • Ability to pass a CORI to become CJIS Certified


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:



  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, holidays. Overtime required.
  • Excellent communication skills


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:



  • APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator and State 911 Dispatch certification
  • One (1) year of experience providing dispatching services
  • One (1) year of experience providing customer service in an office environment
  • One (1) year of experience communicating and working with populations diverse in language, socio-economic status, race/ethnicity and/or cultural backgrounds


STARTING SALARY: $28.05 hourly, $29.06 upon completion of training with a Shift Differential of $1.00 per hour for overnight shifts, full-time, with an excellent benefits package.
