The Wounded Warrior Project's (WWP) Senior Public Relations Specialist helps to enhance and protect the reputation of Wounded Warrior Project. The Senior Public Relations Specialist is responsible for promoting the mission, programs, and services the organization provides to wounded warriors, their families and caregivers through strategic public relations and thought leadership initiatives.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leads cross-functional teams to develop and execute integrated communications plans and campaigns to advance WWP as a thought leader on key priorities.
  • Mentors and advises other public relations teammates; serves as team lead when needed.
  • Advances key messages by researching and writing a range of content, including, but not limited to, press releases, media advisories, articles, blogs, op-eds, videos, executive bios, talking points, fact sheets, and speeches.
  • Identifies subject matter experts at the organization, creates thought leadership content, and develops and implements distribution strategy.
  • Cultivates positive relationships with media and secures local, national and trade media coverage for WWP.
  • Represents WWP in formal interviews and informal discussions with journalists and in meetings with other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Distributes media advisories and content/press releases through newswire distribution, and through direct reporter pitching.
  • Plans press conferences and events to launch new programs and promote WWP initiatives.
  • Works with agencies and other external vendors to execute thought leadership and public awareness campaigns.
  • Investigates media coverage and trending topics relevant to the organization and keeps apprised of industry standards and trends.
  • Identifies issues that may impact the organization's reputation and helps develop communications plans to mitigate situation.
  • Investigates and advises on new public relations capabilities.
  • Coordinates media training for executives and subject matter experts.
  • Works cross-functionally with others in communications, marketing, programs, fundraising or other departments to develop and implement communications plans and strategies.
  • Screens media interview opportunities; prepares warriors, executives, and staff for interviews; and coordinates scheduling and logistics.
  • Manages confidential information.
  • Prepares agendas and presentations for meetings.
  • Tracks and reports on media placements, content creation, and campaigns.
  • Assists WWP teams with PR activities as necessary for special events, fundraisers, and key initiatives.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE

Requirements:

  • Seven years of experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or related field.

Preferences:

  • Seven years of experience with Microsoft Office programs: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Four years of experience in copywriting, editing, photography, and videography (including Adobe Premiere and Photoshop).
  • Four years of experience with media analytics tools, e.g., Cision or Meltwater.
  • One year of experience working in the nonprofit or veteran services sector.

EDUCATION

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, business, journalism, or related field. Equivalent combination of education, experience, training, and certification may be considered in lieu of degree.

CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSURE

Requirements:

  • None.

Preferences:

  • Accreditation in Public Relations (APR).

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • General office environment, temperature controlled.
  • Up to 20% travel.
  • Sitting for extended periods.
  • May require lifting/carrying items up to 20 pounds.
