Job Description

Assist in performing professional accounting work to provide management and staff with necessary financial information for operation of a division or broad departmental program. Examples of duties include: preparing financial reports, preparing budget reports, processing purchase orders for payments, processing time cards for payroll processing, gathering data for special reports, and proof reading of reports.

Work is performed with supervision by the project lead or function lead. Accounting Intern is expected to voice his/her opinion or make recommendations in order to fully understand the process. Work will be reviewed by the project lead or function lead for accuracy, statutory conformance, and compliance with performance standards.

All of the following are to be performed while adhering to the assigned entity's operational policies, safety rules, and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist the lead in maintaining complex fund accounting, preparing special reports on projects requiring extensive research, interpretation, and analysis of statistical data.
  • Assist the lead in preparing the interim, quarterly, and annual financial reports and statements required by law.
  • Assist the lead in compiling data from all accounting records, and verifying accuracy of revenues and expenditures in financial statements.
  • Assist in the billing, costing, receipting and updating of account records.
  • Classify, record, and balance income and expenditures to proper accounts in accordance with BARS and City procedures.
  • Assist the lead in verifying the general ledger account balances.
  • Analyze, and interpret instructions correctly to perform needed accounting functions.
  • Read, interpret, and apply state and local laws, rules, regulations and guidelines governing accounting procedures (including BARS and GAAP).
  • Communicate effectively with the project or function lead to understand the requirements of the assigned duties.
  • Effectively plan and organize work and complete tasks within prescribed timeframes.
  • Basic knowledge of "debit and credit".
  • Contribute to an environment of teamwork and respect.
  • Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by recognizing the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals.
  • Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to field.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be enrolled in a Bachelor's Degree program in accounting, business administration or other related field from an accredited college or University in Washington State.
  • Successful passing of a required background check and credit check.

  • Work is performed in an office environment.
  • Noise level in the office is moderately quiet.
  • May be required to work flexible evening and/or weekend hours as needed.
