Job Announcement

Under general supervision, and in accordance with federal, state, county, and agency regulations, serves in the Sheriff's Office as a lead worker. Develops and prepares lesson plans, shooting courses, range maintenance, weapon maintenance, and numerous other tasks as assigned by the Firearms Range manager, as well as other duties assigned by supervisors acting on behalf of the sheriff. Instruct new recruits and incumbents in firearms safety, basic firearms skills, and advanced firearms skills and tactics. Runs daily training in a classroom and range setting. Assists in planning and implementing agency firearms training. Operates and maintains various weapon systems used by the FCCJA and partner agencies.

  • Serves as a consultant to departments and agencies on various training/personal development issues;
  • Delivers and/or coordinates the delivery of various training programs on a countywide basis (i.e. supervisory development, staff training, and other personal development programs);
  • Assesses training needs of various divisions/departments and makes recommendations on program offerings;
  • Researches new training programs and makes recommendations on their procurement;
  • Coordinates the delivery of courses and prepares course descriptions for inclusion in training program catalogues and announcements;
  • Researches technology-based training;
  • Facilitates team-building exercises at the work group or departmental level;
  • Plays a support role in the implementation of various organizational development activities.

  • Knowledge of group/team dynamics;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;

  • Ability to facilitate meetings and consult with agency staff and management;
  • Ability to keep current on the latest training theory and practice;
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers and other county employees.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to") Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in education, business administration, public administration, or a closely related field; plus, three years of professional experience in curriculum development, delivery of training courses, needs assessments, and/or facilitation of team-building exercises.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Certified Glock Armorer
  • Familiar with or certified armorer with multiple weapons systems
Department of Criminal Justice Services Certifications
  • General Instructor Certification
  • Firearms Instructor Certification

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Driver's License (Required)
Firearms Proficiency-Required upon appointment and recertify annually (Required)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, polygraph exam, and psychological exam to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift more than 50lbs. Ability to stand for long periods of time . All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
