Job Summary:

The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) is hiring a Lab Technician to work in the glassware washing section. WSLH serves as the public, environmental, and occupational health laboratory for the state of Wisconsin and is part of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. This position is located on the east side of Madison (off campus). The glassware section supports the work of many departments at WSLH.

To be successful in this position you must exhibit a positive working attitude, communicate well and develop a good working relationship with co-workers and lab staff and show initiative to see what needs to be done and do it. Previous lab experience is preferred, although we are willing to train someone interested in learning.

Responsibilities:
- Clean labware with mechanical dishwashers and/or by hand
- Complete additional processing of labware as needed by departments
- Ensure proper operation of washers, autoclaves and other equipment
- Follow lab procedures to work safely with chemicals and pathogens
- Run autoclaves for sterilization and decontamination
- Distribute and collect biohazardous waste containers
- Maintain records for equipment, QA/QC and work completed as required
- Keep glassware area clean and well organized
- Perform other work as needed to support the lab


Responsibilities:
Performs routine support in a laboratory to support diagnostic or research work. May calibrate and maintain equipment and creates and/or updates records. May handle administrative and logistical tasks.

  • 5% Uses, maintains, calibrates, and sets up lab equipment and apparatuses according to established policies and procedures and documents activities
  • 5% Coordinates and participates in a variety of routine technical duties by providing assistance to research and/or laboratory staff in testing and experiments
  • 5% Performs quality control, acknowledges documents, performs document reviews and/or writes and revises documents as assigned
  • 5% Completes and acknowledges trainings
  • 70% Sets up, prepares, and cleans laboratory glassware, instruments, equipment, and laboratory work spaces
  • 10% Remove and decontaminate glassware, samples and laboratory materials which may contain
    pathogenic organisms. Work with various departments to coordinate and pick up MERI barrels, as
    needed

Qualifications:

Requirements:
-Must have the physical ability to conduct the work, including lifting 50 pounds occasionally and 25 pounds several times per day.
-Must be able to successfully complete lab required online trainings
-Must have basic computer skills such as email and Microsoft word

Abilities:
-Ability to follow written and verbal procedures safely, accurately and efficiently
-Ability to maintain accurate and organized records
-Excellent interpersonal, team and customer service skills


Work Schedule:

Lab hours are 7:45-4:30 Monday through Friday, although start time can be somewhat flexible.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
