The Elliott School's Office of Undergraduate Academic Advising provides advising services to approximately 2,000 undergraduate students majoring in International Affairs, Asian Studies, Middle East Studies, and Latin American and Hemispheric Studies. Through individual and group advising, workshops, and programs, the Undergraduate Academic Advising Office empowers students to develop goals, navigate academic programs, utilize available resources, and explore the field of international affairs. The undergraduate academic advising team includes general advisors, senior advisors, two assistant directors, one director, and an administrative coordinator who work in a highly collaborative and supportive work environment.

The Senior Academic Advisor will report to the Assistant Director or Director of Undergraduate Academic Advising.

Primary Responsibilities include:


  • Academic Advising caseload: Advise Elliott students from orientation through graduation; facilitate remote summer orientation and advising through webinar, video, and phone contact; monitor undergraduate student progress through individual in-person meetings and on-going email/video/phone communication to review program requirements and opportunities; conduct outreach to probation students and students with Incomplete and Z grades; audit degree progress and completion, including rising senior reviews and graduation clearances.
  • Serve as liaison to one or more academic departments or student service units; participate in a committee, project group, or working group addressing issues in new student orientation, the student experience, curriculum, graduation, or advising operations.


Specialty Areas and Projects will include one of the following areas, which are shared across all of our Senior Academic Advisors:


  • Senior Year Student Programming: Serve on the University and Elliott School Commencement planning committee; propose and execute programming for senior year students in collaboration with the Senior Year Experience team; identify students with Elliott School Special Honors for graduation clearances; assist with the graduation check process for rising seniors.

  • Combined Degree and Curriculum Support: Oversee undergraduate advising efforts and procedures needed to support the Elliott School combined degree program; review transfer and study abroad credit for International Affairs courses; assist with other curriculum related projects as needed.

  • First Year Experience Programming: Manage the Peer Advisor program, including recruiting, hiring, training and supervising of the student Peer Advisors who serve as teaching assistants for the First Year Experience course; collaborate with the First Year Experience Curriculum Committee and coordinate Peer Advisor involvement in the course; assist with other first year related projects as needed.

  • Academic Standing and Student Success: Review the records of students who are eligible for academic probation and suspension; serve on the academic standing review committee; update advising team throughout academic standing review process; in collaboration with the Director, oversee all academic standing notification emails, including Dean's list and those students who return to good standing; in collaboration with the Director, coordinate with the Office of Student Success and imbedded Elliott School success coaches.
  • Programming and administration for other special student populations

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

This is a hybrid position with some days on-campus and some days remote. Sensitivity to, and flexibility around, work-life balance is a hallmark of the Elliott School professional experience. Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous academic advising experience is highly preferred
  • Familiarity with GW curriculum, policies, and procedures is highly desired
  • Familiarity with and strong interest in international studies education is highly desired
  • Proficiency with Banner and DegreeMAP is highly preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to DEI initiatives
  • Knowledge of student development and learning styles
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail


Hiring Range $45,925.13 - $63,191.56
