Requisition ID req32103 Working Title Research Scientist 1 Position Grade 11 Position Summary The University of New Mexico's Center for Geospatial and Population Studies (GPS) maintains New Mexico's traffic crash database for the New Mexico Department of Transportation and serves as both the New Mexico State Demographer's Office and state liaison to the U.S. Census Bureau. We provide accurate, impartial data and objective analysis to support government agencies, lawmakers, and the public in making informed, data-driven decisions. GPS is seeking a Research Scientist 1 to gather, integrate, analyze, describe and visualize data related to vehicular crash data and New Mexico's changing population. Duties for the Research Scientist 1 position will include, but are not limited to, -Gathering and analyzing demographic data from the U.S. Census Bureau and other sources -Geocoding data related to vehicular crashes and housing units throughout New Mexico -Compiling disparate datasets, reviewing for completeness and accuracy, and preparing data for analysis. -Completing data requests from our partners and the public -Collecting and organizing data related to group quarters population such as nursing homes, prisons, and college dormitories. -Creating documentation, flowcharts and diagrams of procedures and tasks. -Presenting research findings to teammates and partnering agencies. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree; no previous experience required. Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. Preferred Qualifications -Experience working with ArcGIS or other Geographical Information Systems software -Experience creating SQL or SAS queries -Experience working with statistical software packages such as R, SAS, or SPSS. -Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel -Knowledge of Python, C, C++ or other general purpose programming languages. -Experience using or developing dashboards with PowerBI or Tableau. -Knowledge of US Census Bureau data products such as decennial counts, American Community Survey, Population Estimates, and PUMS data. -Knowledge of New Mexico's geography and cultural landscape -Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse team. -Ability to work independently and as part of a team -Great time management skills and ability to prioritize competing demands Additional Requirements Campus Main - Albuquerque, NM Department Geospatial and Population Studies (069D) Employment Type Staff Staff Type Term - Full-Time Term End Date 12 months from date of hire Status Exempt Pay Monthly: $3,657.33 - $4,901.87 Benefits Eligible This is a benefits eligible position.
