Position Summary
The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is seeking a highly skilled and visionary Administrative and Strategic Leader to direct and manage the operations of a large, diverse clinical department within the UNM School of Medicine. The successful candidate will serve as a key strategic partner to senior faculty and staff, driving the development and implementation of innovative administrative and operational programs to support the department's Clinical, Research, Education, and Community Engagement missions.
In this critical role, the Department Administrator (DA) will oversee clinical practice management, financial operations, grant administration, human resources, facility management, and general department administration. The DA will collaborate with the Chair and other senior faculty as a full member of the department's leadership team, contributing to integrated strategic and operational decision-making.
Key responsibilities include managing faculty affairs such as compensation, performance evaluation, and productivity metrics, while ensuring compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements. The DA will oversee budgetary planning, fiscal management, and the development of revenue-generating initiatives to support departmental growth. Additionally, this position requires directing internal and external communications, developing marketing strategies for service initiatives, and fostering a cooperative and collaborative work environment. Representing the department to University leadership and external stakeholders, the leader will establish and implement strategies to enhance organizational goals, operational efficiency, and innovation.
We are looking for a candidate with demonstrated leadership, advanced analytical, communication, and organizational skills, as well as expertise in clinical operations, medical practice management, and academic faculty administration. The ideal candidate will possess a strong ability to build relationships, foster collaboration, and guide the department's strategic vision for continued success. The selected candidate will report directly to the Department Chair.
Key Qualifications:
- Strong
interpersonal and communication skills to engage effectively with a diverse range of constituencies. - Knowledge
of medical academic, clinical, research, and regulatory compliance practices. - Experience
with provider credentialing, faculty productivity programs, and performance metrics. - Expertise
in financial and operational analysis, strategic planning, and policy development. - Demonstrated
ability to lead complex administrative programs, human resources initiatives, and marketing strategies. Knowledge of medical faculty compensation programs, grant management, and clinical operations within an academic environment. - Proven
ability to foster a collaborative work environment and develop successful cross-departmental relationships.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Healthcare, Business, or Public
Administration. - Demonstrated experience in senior-level financial
management, preferably in higher education, including strategic financial planning, financial analysis, and developing and managing a business model driven budget. - Experience in UNM faculty and staff hiring processes.
- Demonstrated experience in supervising, coaching and
mentoring a large and diverse administrative and professional staff. - Experience working directly with leadership in core
offices such as UNMMG, UNMH, Contracts and Grants, SOM Finance, HR, Academic Affairs, Faculty Hiring, Clinical Affairs, etc. - Demonstrated experience in overseeing sponsored research,
clinical trials and a variety of awards and professional service contracts to include budgets, pre- and post-award processes and compliance. - Exceptional communication skills including experience
with analyzing data and preparing and presenting narrative and statistical reports. - Demonstrated skills in developing high functioning,
collegial relationships within a large organization with diverse interests; program planning and evaluation; mediation and conflict resolution; facilitation and negotiation; taking calculated risks; and employee development and mentoring.
