Job Summary

Investigates highly complex claims, evaluates alternate solutions to billing issues , and proposes procedures and systems in support of efficient workflows and maximization of reimbursement.

Within the Accounts Receivable (AR) Unit, the Patient Billing and Collections Representative 3 is responsible for researching complex billing issues and providing support to the AR Supervisors and billing staff. The incumbent's main tasks are to support unit Supervisor with client services and aid the billing staff through training and implementation of billing workflows . The incumbent must conform to all UCSF, ZSFG, CPG, government and HIPAA policies and procedures

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $78,900 - $118,300 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Clinical Practice Group (CPG) Business Services provides the University with an internal and centralized physicians' professional billing operation at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. The Accounts Receivable Unit is primarily responsible for the maintenance, control, collection and/or final disposition of assigned accounts such as Medicare, Medi-Cal, HMOs, Self Pay, Legal and Workers Compensation accounts. The unit deals regularly with complex policy and procedural issues that require knowledge of third party payer regulations. It is the unit's responsibility to communicate and coordinate with the various ZSFG departments including external business associates to research and resolve billing matters.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Minimum 3+ years medical (either hospital or professional fee) billing experience in healthcare
  • Strong knowledge of billing and / or collections processes, concepts, systems and external regulations. Knowledge of medical terminology and coding
  • Strong knowledge of the regulations and confidentiality issues involved in the revenue side of medical care, including private and government insurance, self-pay, collections, and reporting and data management
  • Strong analytical skills to produce comprehensive reports, and identify trends and variations
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills to work effectively with all parties to the billing and collection process, and to productively negotiate terms for successful resolution of outstanding accounts and problems
  • Strong ability to provide recommendations on issues of functionality and operations in billing. Ability to serve as a resource, providing expertise and education to staff and management at all levels

Preferred Qualifications


  • Strong computer proficiency in all relevant hardware and software, with a knowledge of spreadsheet and accounting applications, and a variety of specialized billing and insurance systems
