This is a full-time salaried position that will occasionally necessitate work during evenings and weekends.
Seeking highly motivated individuals with a solid foundation in cell and molecular biology. To gain insights into our research program and mission, please visit our laboratory website at https://pharmchem.ku.edu/people/carlo-barnaba. This role primarily centers on studying cytochrome P450 metabolism using a combination of cell biology, mass spectrometry, and microscopy. Ideal candidates should have authored one or more first-author publications in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals. Effective communication skills are a must, and we value individuals who are highly motivated, self-driven, creative, and collaborative, capable of working both independently and as part of a team.

The position reports directly to PI Barnaba and the selected candidate will work closely with the PI to establish experimental protocols and conduct experiments using human cell culture models, genome editing, and mass spectrometry proteomics. The Barnaba Lab is housed in the Multidisciplinary Research Building, near the state-of-the-art Shankel Structural Biology Center and the Mass Spectrometry & Analytical Proteomics Laboratory. Office space adjacent to the laboratory and a desktop computer will be provided.

Job Description
Work directly with PI Barnaba to accomplish the following activities:
35% - Performing mass spectrometry/proteomics experiments, analyzing mass spectrometry data using commercial and/or custom computational pipelines.
20% - Maintain cell cultures and design, execute, and analyze in vitro experiments using human cells (e.g., plasmid cloning, performing western blotting, designing and executing flow-cytometry experiments).
20% - Prepare manuscripts for publication, including the writing of the initial draft and data presentation (figures, tables), based on self-generated data obtained through our in-house research.
10% - Participate in regular communication with the PI via lab meetings and personal meetings.
10% - Train graduate and undergraduate students in laboratory techniques and best practices, fostering a dynamic and collaborative research environment.
5% - Work in coordination with other members of the lab staff to maintain adequate laboratory supplies as instructed by the supervisor.

Position Requirements
NOTE: To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Researcher title, it is necessary to have the PhD in hand. Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an acting basis not to exceed six months.
Upon verification of degree the appointment will be extended to its full duration.

  1. Ph.D in biology, biochemistry, or other science-related field.
  2. Three to five (3-5) years of laboratory experience in an academic lab, as evidenced in application material.
  3. Working knowledge of molecular biology techniques for protein and DNA (e.g., molecular cloning, PCR, western blots, immunoprecipitation) as demonstrated by previous work experience.
  4. Working experience with mass spectrometry proteomics as evidenced in application materials.
  5. Graduate-level coursework or experience utilizing strong quantitative analysis skills, including statistics and data presentation (GraphPad, OriginPro).
  6. Work experience that requires organizational skills and attention to detail.
  7. Strong communication and writing skills as demonstrated by previous work history.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Previous experience with sterile technique (tissue culture) and cell culture maintenance as evidenced in application materials.
  2. Experience with computational programming (Python, MATLAB).
  3. Project management experience.
