Position Summary

The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications forLibrary Associate.

Assist in overseeing the day-to-day functions of the Checkout Unit and the Rice Library Testing Center, including hiring and scheduling student employees.

Duties/Responsibilities



  • With direction from the Circulation and Testing Center Manager, oversee all circulation and stacks maintenance functions. Keep current on the integrated library system (ILS) and library web applications and update staff users as needed. Maintain accurate patron load in partnership with Resource Management. Work with users to resolve problems.

  • With direction from the Circulation and Testing Center Manager, interview, hire, train, and supervise student employees. Contribute to update the student worker policy manual and ensure that student workers comply with policies. Schedule students to work adequate coverage. Evaluate student work and counsel, retrain, or dismiss if performance is deficient.

  • Support activities of the Rice Library Testing Center and maintain necessary certifications. Proctor tests and assist with required clerical support by following all authorized procedures and customer service functions required for successful test delivery and implementation.

  • Maintain library technology such as laptops, batteries, tablets, and accessories. Order supplies and complete routine repairs.

  • Assist patrons with loan and return of library materials; provide assistance to patrons using library resources such as printers, computers, and media equipment.

  • Assist patrons in basic navigation of library website and online resources such as room reservations, catalog, university's information systems and basic reference inquiries.

  • Answer library, campus and community questions via phone, chat, or email, directing people to the correct individual, office, or building.

  • Oversee routine security checks on the floors. Respond to door alarms, restroom alarms, and security system alarms. Assist in maintaining quiet and order in the library. Trained in emergency fire and weather procedures and active shooter scenarios. Keep the Circulation and Testing Center Manager informed of any issues that arise. Oversee evacuation of the building or sheltering in place in emergency situations.
    Share in backup coverage for full-time and student employee staffing when required.

  • Assist with projects from other library units, as needed.

  • Assist as essential personnel to clear the library building when emergency situations arise and/or campus closure is ordered.

  • Assist in the maintenance of physical space including resetting furniture and placement of informational signage.
    Serve on library or university committees.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Knowledge and Skills



  • High school diploma/GED.

  • Skill in interpreting and generating written and oral instructions.

  • Strong judgment and decision-making skills are required to prioritize tasks and judge when policies or procedures may be altered.

  • Experience in effectively handling high pressure and emergency situations.

  • Demonstrated adaptability and aptitude for coping with change.


Preferred Knowledge and Skills



  • Bachelor's Degree.

  • Experience in receiving and giving instructions on a variety of details is highly desired.

  • Experience in supervising people of differing abilities and experience in an academic setting highly desired.


Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements


  • Regular work hours are 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday, for 37.5 hours per week. May be required to adjust work schedule if the Evening Senior Library Assistant is absent.
  • Occasional overtime, flex time, and weekend hours may be required.
