Position Summary: The Microscopy Shared Resource (MSR) is seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist at MS or PhD level to serve as Shared Resource Manager, an essential role supporting the advancement of research in a research core facility. The Manager will provide MSR management support ensuring timely maintenance, quality control and initiating and overseeing the repair of the instruments as needed. The Manager will train users in appropriate, safe and effective use of MSR instrumentation. The Manager may also be required to perform wet lab assays including specimen staining, imaging user generated specimens, live cell imaging and image analysis. Working with the Director, the Manager will meet with investigators to help with experimental design, determine appropriate technologies and workflows, and assist users with troubleshooting imaging and image analysis. The preferred candidates will have a strong understanding of light microscopy, with previous experience in a core facility or service-oriented environment. Ability to manage Imaging Data Storage systems is a plus. As Manager, the applicant must be organized, able to manage multiple projects, make independent decisions, and interface effectively with the Director and personnel from other Shared Resources. He/she must also be willing to carry out administrative tasks such as billing, providing quotes to customers and writing new protocols and SOPs as necessary. The Manager will be an integral part of the operations and ultimately the success of the MSR, a fee-for-service core facility dedicated to providing state-of-the-art microscopy expertise to Dartmouth laboratories to advance their research goals.

Primary Responsibiliites:

NOTE: This position is dependent on the availability of sponsored funding



  • Manage the day-to-day to day operations of the lab including project execution and prioritization.
  • Execute wet-lab experiments using established protocols with minimal oversight.
  • Develop and modify SOPs to enable new workflows.
  • Work with electronic systems for sample tracking, data entry and managing customer orders.
  • Manage the shared resource data storage system
  • Train users on the use of instrumentation.
  • Work in a collaborative environment and participate in team meetings.
  • Be present during normal business hours (9a-5p), with occasional work after hours.
  • Assist with data acquisition, processing and delivery.
  • Participate in discussions with researchers involving experimental design and data interpretation.
  • Provide technical support to users, assisting with experimental design, imaging strategies, and troubleshooting. Become familiar with all services offered and serve as a point of contact for users.
  • Oversee the maintenance contracts and service agreements for all imaging equipment.
  • Present at local, regional, and national meetings to expand the visibility of the core.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities such as workshops and courses to acquire new skills.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:



  • MS degree in a relevant scientific field
  • At least 3 years of directly related experience with light microscopy techniques (e.g. live cell imaging, confocal microscopy immunofluorescence staining/imaging etc.)
  • Proven organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, taking initiative to advance projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with light microscopy technologies including brightfield and fluorescence, and widefield, confocal and super resolution methods.
  • Ability to use sound judgment and communicate effectively with users and facility staff.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate and interact with all levels of staff and management.
  • Willingness to assist with administrative tasks including generating quotes and billing for services.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • PhD in a relevant scientific field.
  • Research microscopy core facility experience.
  • Experience working in a core facility or other customer-facing or service-oriented role.
  • Advanced computer skills and comfort with diverse microscope controlling software, image analysis software, and imaging data storage systems.
  • Experience optimizing workflows to increase efficiency and improve turnaround times.
