The Phlebotomy Supervisor will be responsible for:
  • Supervising phlebotomists and ensuring all daily work assignments are completed by appropriate staff at all sites.
  • Overseeing the phlebotomy training and competency for all who perform phlebotomy service.
  • Developing an effective training program that focuses on all aspects of decision making, dealing with difficult patients, communication, and procedural competency.
  • Assuring staffing skill mix is appropriate.
  • Creating schedules to meet needs for all locations (inpatient/outpatient/satellite sites).
  • Overseeing and monitors the workload of phlebotomy staff, visiting staff from other departments, and interns. Adjusting work assignments, oversees patient flow to reflect changes in volume.
  • Managing, motivating and developing staff. Conducting performance reviews and recommends hires, promotions, pay increases and disciplinary action.
  • Working with Human Resources to ensure smooth hiring, onboarding, progressive discipline and termination processes. Performing payroll transactions in Kronos for all direct reports.
  • Ensuring effective employee relations by sustaining an ethical, non-discriminatory and safe work environment while concurrently establishing effective communication lines and methods.
  • Identifying and solves employee problems, manage conflict, and respond to grievances as needed.
  • Handling complex problems that arise including difficult patient encounters or escalates as needed.
  • Ensuring staff provide timely, courteous and expert services. Coordinates special collections or requests.
  • Ensuring current policies, processes, procedures and reference tools are accurate and available to staff. Developing and implementing new departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensuring phlebotomy staff and operations are in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory requirements, consults Lab Quality Program as needed.
  • Maintaining communications with customers and clients of the laboratory.
  • Overseeing supply inventory for all sites and places orders as necessary.
  • Participating in IT test/process builds and testing. Participating in department continuing education including training programs expanding scope of knowledge.
  • Participating in Lab Medicine committees and education programs to improve communication and customer service. Participating in both department and hospital wide quality improvement including patient identification audits.

To qualify, you must have:

  • High School/GED Diploma
  • Associates Degree Preferred
  • 4 Years' Phlebotomy Experience
  • Phlebotomy supervisor experience and/or one year basic technical training in lab pre-analytical techniques preferred.
  • The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and provide empathy in difficult interpersonal situations
  • Ability to effectively deal with conflicting views and mediate fair and workable solutions.
  • Analytical skills to resolve problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles.
  • Ability to handle highly confidential information and complex situations.
  • Current certification as a Phlebotomist by a national certifying agency (eg. ASCP)

Shift/hours:

  • Day time shift: 8:00am-4:30pm, can change depending on the needs of the department
