The Architectural Draftsman I is primarily responsible for maintaining compliance with standards for capital project construction documents, maintaining campus maps (including visitor, facility, accessibility, utilities, pedestal and interactive), filing and retrieving record drawings and facility documents, updating campus floorplans, helping to maintain UIC's space information database, and performing site visits to verify architectural details, as well as other related work.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Reviews architect/engineer record drawings to meet appropriate CAD Standards. Performs periodic review of CAD standards. Assists in checking complex shop drawings, construction work, and materials for conformance to specifications and standards. Files project closeout drawings and facility documents into records management system.
  • Prepares and updates campus maps using AutoCAD, Illustrator, and other design tools. Utilizes existing engineering drawings to update and maintain campus utility maps.
  • Retrieves facility and project related information from the records management system and archives in support of campus construction projects, studies and initiatives. Ensures records creation, maintenance, use, and disposition are in accordance with University and State policies.
  • Drafts detailed floorplans from design drawings, instructions, sketches, and field notes. Under supervision, helps to maintain UIC's comprehensive campus space information in existing data management system by updating the space inventory.
  • Conducts "on-site" studies by investigating building sites to verify and record data or room use for new and existing projects.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications Required:


1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Any one or combination totaling three (3) years (36 months) from the categories below:

A. college course work in an architecture curriculum may be substituted, up to a maximum of two years, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
  • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
  • Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
  • 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)

B. work experience in architectural drafting.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to perform technical drafting work requiring a high degree of drafting skill.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels of organization.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team.
  • Ability to communicate ideas graphically.
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations; architecture principles.
  • Intermediate AutoCad; Intermediate Adobe Illustrator; Intermediate Word and Excel.
