HK Solutions Group is seeking a Project Accountant to be based out of our Des Moines, IA office.

The Project Accountant is responsible for overseeing all project accounting from initiation to close out to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting for projects including, but not limited to cost tracking, variance analysis and project profitability performance reporting. This role collaborates closely with a variety of interdisciplinary teams (sales, estimating, contracts, accounting, etc.) to successfully manage the accounting stages within the project lifecycle.

Job Responsibilities

Project Financial Management



  • Track and analyze project costs, variances and performance against project budget established during the sales quoting and/or bid process.
  • Ensure project details and budgets are accurately reflected in the ERP system.
  • Attend daily production meetings with internal stakeholders for assigned projects, business units and/or service lines.
  • Attend internal / external kick-off meetings as needed and ensure all project financial deliverable deadlines are met by HK staff (i.e. pay application submittals, invoice delivery, certified payroll reports, lien waivers, etc.)
  • Request, review, and extract relevant provisions from contracts and ensure the execution of all contracts and change orders.
  • Reconcile project accounts and prepare journal entries as needed.
  • Ensure revenue recognition aligns with contractual terms, accounting standards and Company policies.
  • Collaborate with the Accounts Receivable team to ensure timely and accurate billing in accordance with quote verbiage and/or contract terms in order to achieve on-time collections of outstanding invoices or pay applications.
  • Review project invoices and pay applications to verify billing accuracy according to customer project quote or bid.
  • Prepare and/or sign lien waivers as needed.
  • Build and maintain strong professional relationships with customers' and suppliers' representatives to ensure smooth financial operations and collaboration.


Project Reporting



  • Identify and communicate budget variances to business unit and executive leadership when known based on materiality thresholds.
  • Monitor and report financial risks, such as contract non-compliance or cost overruns.
  • Leverage ERP capabilities to develop meaningful project profitability reports for business units, accounting and executive leadership.
  • Collaborate with finance team members to develop insightful dashboards for project actions, performance and general information.


General Accounting & Other



  • Participate in monthly and year-end closing processes as assigned.
  • Perform account reconciliations for assigned balance sheet accounts.
  • Accounts Payable invoice approval, when assigned.
  • Assist in the annual financial audit, as needed.
  • Perform ad-hoc analysis, analytical work or other projects as requested by leadership.
  • Maintain customer and data confidentiality in all aspects of the role.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and accounting regulations impacting project finance.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Education and Experience Required



  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in construction / percentage of completion accounting.
  • Proven knowledge of GAAP procedures and percentage of completion accounting methodology is a must.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage multiple projects simultaneously while effectively prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to interact and participate effectively in a team environment; actively listen, confront issues and provide feedback to internal and external customers, in a courteous and timely manner.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, detail-orientation and communication skills.
  • Professionalism in both written and verbal correspondence.
  • Familiarity with contract management and change order process is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications is essential, specifically Excel and Word.
