SUMMARY

Provides material research and recommendations for equipment replacements, repairs, and rebuilds. Maintains and writes piping, valve, coating, lining and associated specifications. Reviews and approves welding procedures along with recommendations on procedures. Performs failure analysis and corrective recommendations. Provides technical support for engineering, maintenance, and operations at Lake Charles South and other Westlake Chemical plants. Provides continuous improvement in the areas of safety, quality, and value. Job is highly technical with very challenging tasks and responsibilities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

May include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide detailed metallic material recommendations for new and in-service equipment.
  • Provide detailed non-metallic material recommendations for new and in-service equipment.
  • Provide vessel lining and coating recommendations.
  • Review welding procedures for all vessel and piping fabrication and repair work.
  • Perform failure analysis on corrosion and mechanical related failures of pressure vessels, tanks, piping, valves, structural, and rotating equipment.
  • Responsible for writing and maintaining all piping standards, piping specialties, valve specifications, and coating specifications.
  • Provide technical support for engineering, operations, maintenance, and contractors pertaining to equipment design, calculation review, piping design, and operational limitations.
  • Review P&IDs, isometrics, and equipment design for new engineering projects.
  • Provide technical support in above mentioned areas for other Westlake locations.
  • Understand, commit to, and fulfill responsibilities under the Environmental Compliance, Quality Management, Process Safety Management, and plant safety systems.
  • Maintain familiarity with and utilize industry standards, procedures, and guidelines. Check calculations, reports, and studies made by other engineers to ensure accuracy, as well as conformance to codes, specifications, design criteria and good engineering practices.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills including an emphasis on team development and teaching. Knowledge in MS Office, SAP, ASPEN and other industry recognized software is required.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering is required. Minimum of 8 years of experience in project, reliability, or maintenance engineering required.
  • Experience in Chlor-Alkali or other chemical manufacturing environment is preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of the following API standards is required: API 570, 653, 510, 650, 620, 571, and 579. Certifications are preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of ASME codes and standards is required (Section VIII-1, B31 series, Section 1, Section 5, B16 series, Section X, Section IX, Section II, RTP-1, PCC, and NM standards as examples)
  • Strong working knowledge of ASTM standards and applications is required.
  • Successful candidates must satisfy background screening, including motor vehicle record screening, drug testing & pre-employment physical requirements before starting work.
  • A current, valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card is required.

ADDITIONAL KNOWEDGE PREFERRED:

  • Knowledge of FRP construction and repair.
  • Knowledge of non-metallic piping and vessel construction and repair.
  • Knowledge of coatings and linings.
  • Knowledge and understanding of corrosion mechanisms.
  • Knowledge of cathodic protection.
  • Knowledge of welding processes.
  • Knowledge of metals and metallurgy.
  • Knowledge of plastics and polymers.
  • Knowledge of elastomers.
  • Knowledge of PMI.
