Senior Database Engineer Overview:

Sun Country Airlines is seeking a Senior Database Engineer to design, build, enhance, monitor, and support our mission critical database environments. The Senior Database Engineer will develop an understanding of the business processes and applications that their portfolio supports and contribute in the development of a forward-looking roadmap to keep the portfolio stable, relevant to the business, and cost effective. The Senior Database Engineer will support database environments deployed both on-site and in cloud environments, supporting both transaction type processing and business intelligence.

Essential roles and responsibilities of a Senior Database Engineer:

  • Handle database migrations from legacy systems and work with application teams independently to manage these migrations.
  • Interact with business users to understand needs and provide solutions that meet the requirements.
  • Work independently to capture business requirements, design solutions, and manage projects through to completion.
  • Function as the primary database SME, while also contributing to cross-functional modeling and analysis projects. Duties can include installation, configuration, monitoring, user account management, maintenance, modelling and analytics.
  • Develop scalable solutions considering product or platform availability and recoverability requirements, implementing high availability where needed.
  • Development functions include analyzing requirements, developing procedures, automation, testing, deployment and documentation.
  • Manage storage environments for data, logs, and backups, while monitoring space and providing growth statistics.
  • Create database documentation including data standards, procedures, disaster recovery plan, and definitions for the data dictionary.
  • Contribute to the development of a forward-looking roadmap to address upcoming business demand, align with product / industry direction and best practices.
  • Provide advice and training to end-users and administrators of the product.
  • Maintain a stable and available environment following standard procedures for testing and deployment, including application support and participation in on-call rotations.
  • Plan and coordinate testing of changes, upgrades, and new services, ensuring systems will operate correctly in current and future environments.
  • Responsible for problem management activities such as issue resolution, root cause analysis, and working with product vendors when needed.


The required qualifications we are looking for in a Senior Database Engineer include:



  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education/experience
  • 5+ years of previous experience as a Database Administrator
  • MS SQL experience with automation, monitoring, clustering, coding and software deployment
  • Experience with on premise and cloud-based database administration
  • Competence with appropriate database tools and supporting technologies
  • Strong communication, analytical, problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects concurrently
  • Eager to learn, excited about technology and solving problems


Preferred skills:



  • MS SQL certification
  • Oracle experience
  • Previous airline industry experience
