DESCRIPTION

The Moores Cancer Center (MCC) is one of just 57 NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States and the only one in San Diego County. Under supervision, the Histology Lab Research Assistant will assist with performing routine histology and histochemistry on human and rodent formalin fixed-paraffin embedded (FFPE) and frozen samples from multiple projects, using standard protocols and proper positives and negatives control. Will prepare buffers and solutions. Will be able to perform independently all duties after the proper training is complete.

The Histology Lab Research Assistant will assist with laboratory environmental health and safety activities including radioactive, chemical and biological waste disposal. Must comply and keep up to date on all safety training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical knowledge of biology, histology or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Previous laboratory experience.

  • Ability to calculate and prepare chemical solutions accurately.

  • Must be willing and able to work with human and rodent samples, bio-hazardous materials and potential carcinogens.

  • Ability to follow step wise experimental protocols.

  • Knowledge in the operation of a personal computer, including Access, MS Word and Excel.

  • Organizational skills to order and maintain lab equipment and supplies.

  • Ability to learn and carry out new experimental procedures with accuracy and efficiency.

  • Ability to follow established Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines.

  • Enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in scientific research. Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles.

  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, as well as to effectively and accurately document research procedures. Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials.

  • Skill and ability to keep accurate data.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Knowledge in basic math for maintaining ledgers, income and expenditures reports.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge in using balance, processor, embedder, microtome and cryostat.

  • Experience in assisting with cutting frozen and paraffin sections for histology.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $55,374 - $66,064 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $26.52 - $31.64

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
