The Chemistry Department at Columbia University is seeking a full-time technician to join its Mass Spectrometry Core Facility. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Staff Associate I beginning February 2025 or as soon as possible.

This role offers a unique opportunity to work with state-of-the-art mass spectrometry instrumentation, assisting the facility manager in the operation of a highly utilized and dynamic core laboratory. We are looking for a candidate who is passionate about analytical chemistry, eager to learn advanced mass spectrometry techniques, and dedicated to contributing to the success of the facility.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot mass spectrometry and related instrumentation.
  • Prepare and analyze samples using liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC-MS).
  • Perform and process high-resolution mass spectrometry data for submitted samples.
  • Manage an inventory of supplies and reagents.
  • Ensure a safe and organized laboratory environment.
  • Record experimental data in laboratory notebooks and prepare summary reports.
  • Train students and researchers in instrument operation.


Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a related discipline.
  • Strong ability to work both independently and collaboratively with scientists from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Master's degree in Chemistry or a related field.
  • Solid foundation in organic and/or analytical chemistry.
  • Hands-on experience with mass spectrometry instrumentation.
