The Medical Assistant 3 (Hospital Assistant 3) provides patient care support within the Department of Neurological Surgery, Brain and Spinal Injury Center (BASIC), and Marin Adult Medical & Surgical Practices. Under the supervision of the manager, this role assists in clinical operations, coordinates patient care, and facilitates communication between providers and patients.

This position is part of a multidisciplinary team focused on improving health outcomes for patients with chronic illnesses. Responsibilities include clinical assistance, laboratory procedures, and patient advocacy.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Duties

  • Perform vital signs, height, weight, pain screening, and chief complaints documentation.
  • Assist providers, APPs, and nurses in patient preparation for exams and procedures.
  • Support complex medical procedures, such as incision and drainage, and sterile processing.
  • Act as a chaperone during provider-patient interactions.
  • Monitor patient flow and transport patients as needed.
  • Obtain specimens and perform Point of Care Testing, including EKGs and mini C-arm.
  • Manage patient referrals, authorizations, and insurance documentation.
  • Maintain clinical logs, such as temperature logs, disaster cabinet, and crash cart.

Communication & Coordination

  • Provide professional and effective telephone communication following UCSF standards.
  • Notify patients and staff of provider delays and service issues.
  • Act as an advocate for patients by addressing service concerns and providing necessary referrals.
  • Document patient information within the Electronic Health Records (APEX).

Operations & Administrative Support

  • Maintain clean, well-stocked exam rooms and order medical supplies.
  • Assist in coordinating appointments, lab tests, and imaging as per provider orders.
  • Support front desk operations as needed.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives such as wait time studies and outcome data collection.
  • Train new Medical Assistants and temporary staff in clinical and administrative duties.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Certification from an accredited Medical Assistant program
  • One year of experience as a Medical Assistant or Hospital Assistant in a medical practice.
  • Current American Heart Association CPR Certification.
  • Willingness to travel and work at multiple UCSF locations.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience with Epic/APEX Electronic Health Records.
  • Fluency in Spanish or Chinese (speaking, reading, writing).
  • Background in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, or Family Medicine.
  • Experience handling patient data, scheduling, and insurance authorizations.
