About the Opportunity
The Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs is the chief academic officer for the institution and lead operational executive, responsible for the academic mission of the University, and for ensuring the overall academic integrity and effective operation of the institution.

The Provost is responsible to the Chancellor for the overall coordination and effective implementation of the University's academic programs and exercises leadership in promoting equality instruction, research, and public service. This position is responsible for the developing and administering the academic policies and regulations of the University. The Provost is also responsible for keeping the Chancellor informed about all matters pertaining to the operation of the academic division of the University.
In collaboration with other senior administrators, the Provost is a principal actor in the development of the University's annual budget and long-term financial plans and plays a vital role in institutional strategic planning, capital planning, and operational planning.

About the Team
The Division of Academic Affairs is entrusted with the task of establishing and maintaining the academic climate and quality of Winston-Salem State University. The division facilitates academic planning aligned with the mission and goals of the university. The division supports and promotes leadership development in support of academic programs and services of the University and coordinate the supervision, performance management, and professional development of academic administrators, faculty, and staff.

The division facilitates the implementation of campus governance procedures and faculty engagement in meaningful ways in the affairs of the University. It assesses and manages the review, development, and implementation of academic policy. Academic Affairs develops and supports an institutional infrastructure for professional development opportunities for faculty and staff.

About the Role
The Provost is responsible for academic planning to ensure academic program quality, relevance, and consistency with the mission and goals of the University. This role provides leadership in attracting and retaining highly qualified, faculty, and staff to support the academic programs and services of the University. This position also provides leadership to the division of information technology, student success, and enrollment management.

The Provost is responsible for the supervision, performance management, and professional development of academic administrators, faculty, and staff within the division of academic affairs, including evaluations for reappointment, tenure, merit awards, and other personnel actions. This position is responsible for working in partnership with the faculty and other executive officers to implement campus governance procedures and engage faculty in meaningful ways in the affairs of the University.
The Provost will also be responsible for:

  • reviewing, developing, and implementing academic policy;
  • enhancing teaching effectiveness by encouraging and providing support for professional development opportunities for faculty;
  • facilitating communication and cooperation within and among the various administrative units of academic affairs through regular meetings, written memoranda, conferences, and other appropriate procedures;
  • promoting constant improvement of curricula and academic programs through self-study, innovation, external reviews, and other appropriate procedures in order to maintain academic excellence;
  • working with deans, directors, department chairs, and faculty to create a student-centered environment that promotes institutional pride and allegiance;
  • developing improved administrative procedures by implementing a program of assessment for units within Academic Affairs; and
  • representing the University in the external community and articulating its priorities for fundraising and resource development.


Education and Experience
The successful candidate will have a terminal degree from an accredited institution and at least 10 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in a higher education setting or comparable environment.
Other preferred qualifications include:

  • earned doctorate with distinguished record of research, scholarship, and teaching that would qualify candidate for appointment at the rank of tenured, full professor in a University department;
  • outstanding record of leadership and academic administrative experience;
  • accomplishments that provide evidence of superior interpersonal and communication skills, including working effectively with diverse groups and establishing collaborative relationships within and outside the University setting;
  • experience developing and implementing academic and strategic plans and providing leadership for the assessment of student learning outcomes, accreditation, and budget development;
  • ability and willingness to assist with advancement and resource development activities;
  • experience with and commitment to diversity and shared governance;
  • passion and appreciation for the University's history and mission as a public Historically Black College and University (HBCU), and its contributions to the region and the state; and
  • appreciation for and understanding of emerging trends in higher education.
