Description

Note: APA operates on a 37.5-hour work week with one hour lunch breaks each day. APA sets salaries based on several considerations, including years of relevant experience, level of education, and previous staff and/or governance experience at APA.

The purpose of this position is to carry out the mission of the American Psychological Association - to advance the creation, communication, and application of psychological knowledge to benefit society and improve people's lives - in relation to increasing the number of training opportunities APA members, Minority Fellowship program participants and community stakeholders. This purpose is carried out by providing leadership in the development, implementation, and maintenance of national training programs focusing on practice and research in these communities. This position is 100% funded by a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration through September 30, 2029.

Education and Experience Required:



  • Minimum educational requirement is a bachelor's degree in psychology or a related behavioral/social science field.
  • Doctorate in psychology or a related behavioral/social science field is preferred.
  • A master's degree and eight years of professional program management experience at a national level may substitute for the educational requirement.
  • Must have experience managing multiple projects that range from moderate to highly complex efforts.
  • Clinical experience in mental health and/or substance abuse services is preferred.
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated skill in adapting to, supporting, and facilitating change in the work environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to psychological science related to social justice, communities of color and underserved communities.
  • Proven experience in leadership, management, and supervision.
  • Experience with building stakeholder engagement through various communication methods is preferred.
  • Demonstrated skill in adapting to, supporting, and facilitating change in the work environment.
  • Experience with financial tracking and budget development/monitoring.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal savvy and business acumen.
  • Demonstrated collaborative and innovative approaches to decision-making and problem-solving.

Responsibilities:

Lead the management and administration for the Leadership Development Institute's training programs:



  • Lead the management and advancement of all Institute training project planning, implementation, administration, meetings, coordination of advisory committees, and reporting.
  • Hire, develop, and supervise staff, interns, consultants, and temporary personnel.
  • Lead and provide management oversight of all Institute training related business operations, including developing/monitoring budgets, recruiting and outreach, and coordinating with the Grants and Contracts Office and other APA offices to ensure the accurate and timely production of deliverables.
  • Collaborate closely with the Head of the Leadership Development Institute, the Institute's Senior Director and Directors, and Principal Investigators on Grants held by the Leadership Development Institute's family of programs.
  • Manage all training programs in the Leadership Development Institute family of programs.
  • Oversee the management of the application process for grants and contracts for training programs.
  • Identify opportunities for innovation and programmatic growth, expansion, and collaboration.


Lead the overall management and implementation of all professional development and evaluation projects for training fellows and staff:



  • Organize and implement webinars, workshops, institutes, and other professional development opportunities for fellows and training program staff.
  • Ensure monitoring and tracking of current training programs including MFP fellows' progress and professional development relevant to Institute and MFP program goals and policy issues.
  • Coordinate with the data analyst and appropriate personnel to conduct ongoing evaluations of programs by identifying and reporting on proximal and distal outcomes and their influential inputs and processes.


Represent APA, the Institute, and the MFP to members, outside organizations, and interested individuals:



  • Seek out and interact with senior staff in other professional organizations and represent the APA and the Institute (inclusive of MFP and new programs) to promote and achieve the Institute training goals and objectives.
  • Develop relationships with APA members in boards, committees, divisions, and other affiliated organizations as needed.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
