Mandatory Position
This position is designated as 'mandatory' and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the building as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions. |
Primary Purpose of Position |
This is a Facility Maintenance Technician (Mechanical Trades) at the Journey level. The position is considered to be a fully functioning in a particular trade area. Additionally, this position is expected to be able to perform all general maintenance work at the contributing level. This position may also be given the opportunity to perform/learn another trade discipline either at the contributing or journey level. Tasks may include maintenance, repair, placement, fabrication, installation, alteration, construction and design of facility components in assigned shop. |
Minimum Education/Experience |
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
University Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or equivalent and two years experience. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. |
Essential Job Duties |
- Maintain, repair, place, fabricate, install, alter, construct and design facility components that require the application of skills in planning, problem solving, and attention to detail, teamwork, communication and adherence to safety.
- Perform routine maintenance to ensure that machines continue to run smoothly, building systems operate efficiently, and/or the physical condition of buildings do no deteriorate.
- Use electrical test devices to troubleshoot and repair chiller electrical control circuits.
- Diagnose mechanical problems and determine how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs as necessary.

Other Work Responsibilities |
- Act as a Journey level worker and provide assistance with other facility maintenance technicians.
- Work with supervision or instruction, and complete work with competence and professionalism in compliance with generally accepted trade practices.
- Communicate effectively with customers, and managers, and provide high-quality customer service based on University policy and procedures.
- Record daily activities in an order tracking system (Archibus).
- Perform other duties as assigned and/or delegated to support all operations.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education |
- High school diploma or GED equivalency.
- Associate's degree from an accredited institution preferred in HVAC or Engineering Technology.
- 2-4 years' experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC and refrigeration equipment specializing in chillers/cooling towers.
- Ability to effectively communicate the English language (reading, writing, interpretation, and comprehension) required.
- Effective skills in verbal, written, and interpersonal communication.
- Computer literate.
- Knowledge and skill with Google Chrome, Microsoft Word, and Excel, and willingness to learn new programs.
- Ability to effectively work/interact with persons from different backgrounds and cultures.
- Ability to foster and create an atmosphere of teamwork.
- Selected candidate must have the mental and physical capabilities to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.

Necessary Licenses or Certifications |
Positions may be required to possess and maintain required certification, licensure, educational level, and/or experience criteria as applicable to the tasks being performed and follow applicable building codes.
EPA 608 universal certification is REQUIRED for this position..
Valid driver's license required. The
HVAC Shop position requires the operation of assigned vehicles on and/or off campus and is required to possess, maintain, or obtain a valid driver's license upon appointment to the position. |
