Job Description

The Financial Counselor position is a fully cross-functional position in the Patient Access Services career path. The Financial Counselor performs all financial screening functions, and helps to ensure all insurance requirements are met prior to a patient encounter. Maintain excellent working relationship with community providers and their staff. Accurately completes patient accounts based on departmental protocols, policies and procedures and compliance with regulatory agencies. This position includes, but is not limited to the following

Essential Functions

* Adheres to Corporate Compliance Guidelines
* Demonstrates knowledge and compliance with the Hospital Safety and Infection Control policies as required by OSHA and the Patient Safety Program.
* Adheres to all Jefferson Policies and Procedures.
* Maintains an understanding of governmental, private and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital's Charity Care programs. Initiates and or processes referrals to governmental, private and Charity Care programs. Assists patients in the completion of financial assistance applications. Develops a comprehensive understanding of reimbursement levels for the top third-party payers utilized by Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Stays abreast of changes in major insurance plans, deductibles, co-insurance and non-covered benefits. Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the core values of the Hospital.

Education:
Associates Business Preferred OR
Associates Healthcare Preferred

AND
Experience: Previous experience required in one or more of the following roles: Patient Access Representative, Financial Counselor, Customer Service Representative, Patient Accounts Billing Representative, Patient Accounts Collections Representative. Knowledge of hospital and physician billing and collections preferred. Knowledge of State and Federal financial assistance programs preferred. Clear, effective communication skills; mature approach to problem-solving for all types of issues; skills in using PC computers and computer applications; Knowledge of medical terminology; negotiating skills; and detail orientation. To perform this job successfully, an individual must demonstrate competence in each essential duty.
