Job Details

The Lead Mammography Technologist performs mammography exams, screenings and diagnostic studies, and assists during invasive procedures. Via these procedures and under the direction of the physician, the Mammography Tech detects breast tissue abnormalities and presents them to the physician for diagnosis. Delivers patient care and education before, during and after diagnostic imaging procedures. Serves as a technical resource on radiologic procedures, assists in developing and reviewing routine procedures, and participates in the quality assurance and performance improvement process. Assists department management with administrative and leadership duties as assigned, including training, scheduling, and mentoring staff mammography technologists, and may act in a supervisory capacity in the absence of the regular supervisor.

Job Description

  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
  • Operates mammography equipment and performs various mammography-related examinations to produce radiograph images for clinical screening and diagnostic purposes.
  • Ensures successful procedure by ensuring appropriate patient and breast position, instructing patient throughout the procedure, and adjusting compression mechanisms and equipment controls to set exposure factors.
  • Provides staff and patient protection in accordance with prescribed radiation safety standards; is a department champion for safety and quality standards.
  • Documents patient mammogram services by completing patient record charting.
  • Obtains complete and accurate history and delivers care and support services to clients before, during and after mammogram procedures, e.g. explaining procedures, answering inquiries, etc.
  • Ensures operation of mammography equipment by completing quality assurance checks and verifies preventive maintenance completion, use instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, calling for repairs, and maintaining equipment inventories. Makes recommendations on new equipment and equipment modifications for the department.
  • Assists with scheduling to ensure proper coverage, training and development of mammography staff, and other administrative needs as assigned to maintain efficient department operations.
  • Provides technical and general guidance over technical staff, including reinforcement of adherence to department procedure and confidentiality guidelines. Assists Supervisor with the evaluation of workloads and training and development.
  • Performs other related technologist duties as directed by the supervisor or manager, including those related to quality assurance and/or control and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Certifications, Registration or License, Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required):

  • Knowledge of techniques and procedures used in mammographic imaging, ability to produce images of internal body structures for diagnosis and early detection of breast diseases in women.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Mammography certification required.
