JOB SUMMARY
UT Southwestern Medical Center has a new opportunity available for the role of Abstractor within the Revenue Cycle Department team. Works under general supervision to be responsible for abstracting patient data from patient charts to determine billable charges based on physician's treatment and diagnosis, generating charges to patients and third party carriers, and generating maximum revenue for services rendered. This position will support the division of Pediatric ICU / PICU. The duties for this position will include but not limited to the following:
- Performing daily census reports and tracking PICU admissions.
- Utilizes the tracking system to monitor PICU daily visits.
- Abstracts CPT codes, modifiers, diagnosis codes and manually keys the charges into the UTSW EPIC system.
- Identify the PICU physician group has not entered a daily note on a PICU patient.
- Maintain a production standard of 40 notes and meeting a quality standard of 95%.

- Experience
2 years of physician or hospital billing or collections experience, including extensive experience and knowledge in at least one medical specialty. Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification may be considered in lieu of 2 years of experience.

JOB DUTIES
- Locates inpatient service records of patients on assigned services from hospitals, clinics, and/or physicians' offices.
- Abstracts relevant information, i.e., onset of symptoms, type of illness or condition, prospective or definitive diagnosis, tests, procedures, and other types of services rendered.
- Ensures all billable services performed by attending/teaching physician have been properly documented according to federal, state, and insurance regulations.
- Utilizes coding resources, i.e., ICD-9, CPT, and department or division fee schedule, to enter services rendered and diagnosis into computer or on billing sheets.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
