Position Highlights

The University of Arizona is seeking candidates to fill The Kemper and Ethel Marley Chair and Endowment for Sustainable Rangeland Stewardship. Faculty appointment will be a Full Professor and Extension Specialist in Rangeland Ecology and Management in the School of Natural Resources and the Environment (Nine-month appointment). The Marley Endowment for Sustainable Rangeland Stewardship works to support technical assistance, community-based research, and education to enhance and strengthen the ecological, economic, and social viability of Arizona ranching in the 21st century. Generous annual funding from the endowment will help support the work of the Kemper and Ethel Marley Chair.

The candidate selected for this position will work with communities to solve specific resource management problems and promote problem-solving research and careful stewardship of Arizona's economic and ecological rangeland resources and their use. The successful candidate will provide leadership in: (1) developing and facilitating diverse networks of participants in communication that leads to increased knowledge about the role of coordination, collaboration, and rangeland ecological monitoring in making sound resource management decisions, (2) providing agile field-based research to address community-identified needs with evidence from monitoring and the best available science, (3) developing and providing educational programming that focuses on evidence-based decisions to support natural resource-dependent communities and economies and (4) identifying emerging issues for research, outreach and Extension programming.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a high-profile research and Extension program in Sustainable Rangeland Stewardship, emphasizing arid and semi-arid rangelands, recognized at regional, state, national, and international levels. The successful candidate will also bring scientific research to Arizona's ranching families and rural communities to support stewardship of Arizona's economic and ecological resources for the use of rangelands by domestic livestock. The position is associated with an endowed chair which may be renewed every five years and is subject to a review process.

Duties & Responsibilities

The position is a nine-month, tenure track Full Rank Professor and Extension Specialist appointment (60-30-10 Extension-Research-Service).

  • Collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including other state and federal agencies, ranchers, commodity groups, private industry, private landowners, and non-governmental organizations, to formulate educational programs for diverse audiences and develop innovative approaches to solving a variety of rangeland problems, such as achieving multiple use objectives across regional working landscapes with multiple ownerships.
  • Provide training, technical expertise and educational programming support for County Extension Agents and staff in the discipline area of rangeland management with specific expertise in Federal and State land grazing issues.
  • Develop and implement participatory research and education programs that support sustainable rangeland stewardship, community-based conservation, and sustainable use of natural resources.
  • Engage and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in sustainable rangeland stewardship.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in a relevant field such as but not limited to Natural Resources, Rangeland Ecology and Management, Environmental Policy, Participatory Research, or Restoration Ecology.
  • 10-years of relevant outreach and/or Extension experience post Ph.D.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with regulation of livestock grazing permits and leases on Federal and State lands including application of NEPA to permit renewals and implementation; application of the Endangered Species Act to regulate permitted uses of rangelands and other pertinent state and federal environmental regulations influencing the use and management of rangelands.
  • Experience with wildlife/livestock interactions, including mitigation of livestock grazing practices in response to presence of critical habitat for a variety of threatened and endangered species.
  • Experience with rangeland monitoring, assessment of trends, and state and transition models of plant succession.
  • Experience working with diverse groups of stakeholders to support sustainable rangeland stewardship, community-based conservation, and use of natural resources.
  • Proven track record of high-quality accomplishments in educational, training, and outreach programming for diverse audiences in formal and informal settings.
  • Experience engaging and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in sustainable rangeland stewardship.
