SOME (So Others Might Eat) provides material aid and comfort to our vulnerable neighbors in the District of Columbia, helping them to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness through programs and services that save lives, improve lives, and help to transform the lives of individuals and families, their communities, and the systems and structures that affect them. We meet immediate needs with food, clothing, and healthcare and offer the tools one needs to live with hope, dignity, and greater independence.

Compensation: We offer our employees a competitive compensation and benefits package that reflects our organizational culture, mission, and core values. The salary range for this position is $95,160.00 to $100,638.00 and may be commensurate with experience.

Position Description: The Director of Annual Giving is a strategic leadership role responsible for sustaining and enhancing financial resources essential for the achievement of SOME's strategic business goals. This pivotal position oversees the planning and execution of a comprehensive annual giving strategy and fundraising program, managing multi-million-dollar direct mail and digital giving initiatives, alongside other individual donor fundraising opportunities..

Qualifications:

Required: Bachelor's degree or 8 years of fundraising experience in place of a degree; Minimum of 5 years of experience in fundraising, development, or related fields, with a proven track record of success in individual giving and donor relations.

Preferred: Graduate degree, CFRE, CAP, or relevant professional certificate or training highly regarded.

Required License/Certification: N/A

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (40 hours per week); Hybrid Schedule (3 days in office/week)

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and cultivate relationships with donors, volunteers, and internal/external stakeholders
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to develop and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies that drive revenue growth and support organizational priorities.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to leverage data and metrics to inform decision-making and drive continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with the ability to foster an inclusive and welcoming philanthropic community
  • Knowledge of fundraising best practices, trends, and emerging technologies in the nonprofit sector.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire, motivate, and collaborate with peer team members toward achieving ambitious fundraising goals
  • A high level of accountability, self-motivation, and ability to work collaboratively and with confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in fundraising CRM systems, donor databases, digital fundraising platforms, and MS Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, etc


Expected Contributions: Annual Giving



  • Manage consulting groups and vendors and provide strategic counsel in support of SOME's financial goals
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate fundraising efforts with marketing, communications, and programmatic initiatives, ensuring alignment and synergy across the organization.
  • Develop and execute a robust annual giving strategy to maximize philanthropic support from individual donors, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives
  • Develop and manage an annual calendar of campaigns and fundraising initiatives in concert with other key organizational dates, write in-print and digital appeals with quality consistent with SOME's development communication standards, design and create direct mail package pieces and online giving forms, and coordinate internally and externally for final delivery
  • Work closely with the Finance Department to develop and maintain gift-receiving policies and procedures, and ensure proper gift coding, and timely payment of vendors.
  • Collaborate with Communications on advertising to, and acquisition of, new donors, social media fundraising plans, and aligning social media posts and website updates with individual giving strategy.
  • Lead innovation initiatives for fundraising opportunities like matching gifts, workplace giving, peer-to-peer giving, SMS giving, etc.
  • Cultivate and steward relationships with individual donors, providing exceptional donor experiences and personalized engagement opportunities to foster long-term philanthropic partnerships.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of donor recognition and stewardship programs, ensuring donors are acknowledged, appreciated, and kept informed of the impact of their contributions.
  • Oversee and delegate responses to general inquiries received by phone and email.
  • Utilize and update SOME's donor database. Train team members on how best to use the CRM to engage with their donor portfolios, while also creating standard operating procedures on how to receive gifts.


Reports to: Executive Vice President, Chief Development Officer

Position Designation: This position is designated as Safety Sensitive. You may be subject to drug testing before or during your employment with SOME. In this position, you may be disqualified from employment based on the presence of marijuana in test results, even if you possess a medical card authorizing the use of medical marijuana.

Physical Demands: Must be able to lift to 20 pounds. Requires looking at a computer screen for several hours a day. May be required to sit for long periods. Must be able to travel to events and meetings offsite
