Overview

The Sierra Lobo Rocket Technology and Engineering Services II (RTES II) contract provides advise and assist services (A&AS) at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Edwards AFB, California. AFRL conducts rocket propellant and rocket propulsion research, as well as developing associated test processes and facilities. The Technical Services work group provides expert program, project, and regulatory compliance support. The successful candidate will have extensive experience as an Occupational Safety Manager, working in an industrial research test facility. The successful candidate should have a strong working knowledge of Department of Defense Weapons Safety programs.

Sierra Lobo, offers customers a full range of professional and technical capabilities, including Test and Evaluation, Systems Engineering, and Advanced Technologies. We also develop products and processes related to Cryogenic Fluid and Thermal Management Systems, Densified Propellant Management Systems, and Prototype Extreme Pressure and Temperature Systems. Our customers include the Department of Defense (DoD), the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, Missile Defense Agency (MDA), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

This position will be located at Edwards AFB, CA.

Responsibilities

The employee will participate in, but not limited to, the following activities:

    Perform and assist in various occupational safety tasks relating to fall protection, confined space, hazardous energy control, safety culture, risk management, safety inspections, hazard reporting, mishap and test reporting/investigation, safety education and training, traffic safety, hot work, and ladder safety.
  • Support the Detachment 7 Occupational Safety Office in managing the mishap prevention program and in cultivating a robust safety culture that ultimately prevents mishaps and reduces risk.
  • Provide technical occupational safety guidance and consultation at all levels within AFRL RQ-West.
  • Review complex site, test, and operational plans/procedures/programs with an occupational safety lens to guarantee personnel safety and mission success.
  • Work cooperatively with other site functions, including but not limited to Bio-Environmental, Weapons Safety, Systems Safety, Operations, Civil Engineering, etc., to provide an effective occupational safety program.


Qualifications

  • REQUISITE SKILLS:

    • Comprehensive knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations, standards, procedures, methods, and techniques relevant to occupational safety (e.g., identifying, evaluating, and recommending methods of controlling various industrial hazards related to the full range of work operations, etc.).
    • Knowledge of organizational and communication skills to develop and continuously improve safety culture and working relationships with diverse military, civilian, professional, and technical populations.
    • Excellent verbal and writing skills to prepare safety presentations/briefings, formal training materials, and occupational safety inspections and surveys.
    • Working knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other platforms.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • 10 years of experience as a safety professional that includes, but is not limited to, the management of safety programs such as fall protection, confined space, safety inspections, mishap investigations, and hazardous energy control (HEC) programs.
    • Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health or equivalent is preferred.
    • Credentialed through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals is preferred (e.g., CSP, ASP, OHST, etc.).
    • Fall Protection Competent or Qualified Person (required).
    • Competent in Confined Space safety (required).
    • Competent in Hazardous Energy Control (HEC) (required).
    • Familiar with Weapons Safety program requirements.
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
