Timmons Group is currently seeking a Planner I to join our Economical Development Department located in our Richmond, VA office location. The Planner I is responsible for completing assigned tasks under the supervision of the Group Leader, Project Manager, or more experienced staff. The Planner I is expected to apply the concepts learned through required education and prior professional experience to solve engineering and planning tasks as assigned. This position is typical for recent engineering and/or planning graduates, as well as engineers and planners new to the respective field of work. Essential Duties and Responsibilitiesof a successful candidate include but are not limited to:
- Executes project design and production using relevant office software, such as MS Office, AutoCAD, Adobe Suite, GIS, Synchro, and Sidra
- Completes calculations using engineering formulas and skills and/or utilizes computers in order to solve problems
- Conducts research and writes summary reports which are used in the completion of project work, including the preparation of recommendations regarding engineering and planning needs for each project
- Assists in the preparation of engineering and planning-level cost estimates
- Completes field observation, inspection, and data collection duties as directed by managing staff members
- Assists the project team with completing a project while demonstrating knowledge of general concepts of planning, analysis, architecture, and design
- Communicates with staff and internal design team as directed by managing staff members
- Works under the supervision of Engineers, Planners, Landscape Architects, Project Managers, or other staff for assigned projects
- Works independently to solve assigned tasks quickly and accurately, with expectations to seek guidance from managing staff members
- Works cooperatively with other team members and may direct activities in order to complete assigned project/tasks
- Prepares materials necessary for public meetings and public engagement activities as directed by managing staff members
- Provides input to managing staff members on planning, analysis, or design issues based on the results of calculations or engineering solutions
- Performs other duties as assigned
Skills/Requirementsof a successful candidate include but are not limited to:
- A bachelor's degree in Engineering, Urban Planning, or other related area is preferred
- Ideal candidates will have some professional experience in planning, ideally related to public and private land development as well as infrastructure related projects
- Ideal candidates will have working knowledge of office software (Word, Excel, etc.), Civil 3D software, Adobe Suite, GIS, and other relevant planning/engineering tools
- Must be capable of correctly operating technical analysis equipment and computer equipment after being provided training
- Must be able to read and interpret technical literature, research and engineering plans
- EIT or AICP (or ability to obtain) preferred
- Excellent communication and management skills
- Strong, creative graphics skills and ability to distill complex information into public-facing materials
- Understanding of design, details, and construction drawing preparation including site layout, grading, hardscape, drainage, and planting
