7:00 am - 3:30 pm; Monday - Friday with occasional evening and weekend hours required, as necessary.

Mandatory Position
This position is designated as 'mandatory' and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the building as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.
Primary Purpose of Position
This position is expected to be able to perform all general maintenance work at the Journey level. This position may also be allowed to perform/learn another trade discipline either at the contributing or journey level. Tasks may include maintenance, repair, placement, fabrication, installation, alteration, construction, and design of facility components in assigned buildings.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

University Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or equivalent and two years experience. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Essential Job Duties
The FM Technician Building Trades performs under the direction of the Building Interiors Supervisor.

Duties include:

  • Provide career tracks including but not limited to Cabinet making, carpentry, masonry, painting, plastering, and roofing. Will perform a variety of tasks ranging from routine and unskilled, to highly skilled.
  • Apply methods and general procedures of applicable trades/maintenance techniques and develop skills in procedures, techniques, tools, materials, and/or equipment appropriate to trade.
  • Tasks include maintenance, repair, placement, fabrication, installation, alteration, construction, and design of facility components requiring the application of skills in planning, problem-solving, attention to detail, teamwork, communication, and knowledge of and adherence to safety policies and regulations.
  • Position may serve as lead technician and/or crew leader, directing the work of others.

Other Work Responsibilities

  • Perform multiple fully functioning tasks in the building trades area.
  • Perform all general maintenance work at the Journey level.
  • May perform/learn another trade discipline either at the contributing or journey level.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and/or delegated to support all operations.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent and two years of experience.
  • Experience in the trades areas of cabinet making, carpentry, masonry, painting, plastering, and roofing areas.
  • Two years of experience with metal stud framing is preferred.
  • Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  • Ability to follow applicable building codes.
  • Effective skills in verbal, written, and interpersonal communication, however, excellent communication skills are preferred.
  • Experience with university systems, Archibus, Kronos, Niner Talent and others or ability to gain proficiency.
  • Knowledge and skill with Google Chrome, Microsoft Word, and Excel, and willingness to learn new programs and other office tools.
  • Ability to operate assigned vehicles on and/or off-campus.
  • Ability to perform broad and functionally facility maintenance assignments including the most complex, non-routine building systems using skills related to assigned trade area.
  • Ability to apply and interpret technical knowledge to resolve unique or highly complex situations.
  • Experience with estimate assigned work projects considering time, cost, and resources.
  • Ability to demonstrate a thorough and extensive understanding of programs, concepts and practices in the most complex building systems in one trade area as well as a general understanding of one or more different trade areas.
  • Ability to train other technicians on the operation of special equipment. as well as guide, direct and coach others regarding application and interpretation of technical issues.
  • Working knowledge of carpentry, masonry, painting, plastering and/or roofing, and is able to recognize malfunctions or potential problems and ensure necessary repairs are completed.
  • Serves as the lead worker in a project requiring a discipline specific expert, also with ability to train staff and work crews.

Necessary Licenses or Certifications
Positions may be required to possess and maintain required certification, licensure, educational level, and/or experience criteria as applicable to the tasks being performed and follow applicable building codes.
  • A valid driver's license is required. The FM Tech Building Trades operates assigned vehicles on and/or off campus and is required to possess, maintain, or obtain a valid driver's license upon appointment to the position.
