Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Summer Intern at UL Research Institutes, based in our Marietta, Georgia office.

This position is an 11-week internship focused on acquiring foundational skills to assist with components of on-going research addressing concerns related to advancements in consumer products and technologies that may impact human health. Topic areas an intern could potentially engage in at CIRI include: physicochemical characterization of particle and chemical emissions stemming from electronic nicotine delivery systems or e-cigarettes, 3D printers, determining the biological activity and toxicological profiles of consumer products or aerosols using in vitro model systems, inhalation dosimetry, molecular epidemiology and the development of novel measurement methodologies assessing hazards within vulnerable populations.

What you'll learn and achieve:

As a Research Summer Intern you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:

  • Conduct literature reviews to analyze consumer safety incident data and laboratory test results in order to determine causes of product related problems and develop solutions.

  • Aid in experiments and related activities to ensure timely completion of projects.

  • Evaluate and document your results in formal reports and contribute to peer-reviewed journal articles.

  • Engage in the formulation, evaluation, and correlation of broad research concepts and participate and/or lead the analysis of unique problems and developing novel conceptual solutions to identified technical and theoretical problems.

  • Conduct lab and/or field-based research using a variety of physical and computational test methods.

  • Perform analytical and biological measurements with a variety of instruments and apparatus. This includes understanding the principles of operation to ensure appropriate application, functionality of the device, and the calibration status. Keep work area neat, clean, and safe.

  • Assess and read journals, scientific publications, and attend/present at scientific conferences within one-year of internship completion.

  • Enhance technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others, and independent critical thought.

  • Performs other duties as directed.

Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

  • BS and/or MS in Chemistry, Biology, Public Health, or Environmental Health

  • Demonstrated general knowledge of chemistry or biology disciplines.

  • Experience in lab and/or field-based research, chemical, and/or toxicological research practices and instrumentation including aseptic technique, protein and DNA extraction, PCR, cell culture, in vitro toxicological assays, ELISA, IHC, and imaging.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply academic and applied technical knowledge and skills.

  • Proficiency with MS Office, MATLAB, Excel, GraphPad and PowerPoint

  • Proficiency or experience in R, SAS, and Python is a plus.
