Student Nurse Intern Program 2025 Yale New Haven Hospital The YNHH Summer Intern Program is a paid mentorship designed for student nurses who are currently enrolled in an accredited School of Nursing and will graduate December 2025/January 2026 or Summer 2026. Date of Program: 5/27/2025 to 7/25/2025 (9 weeks) Graduation Ceremony 7/25/2025 Locations: St Raphael and York St Campuses Hours per week: 24 hrs/week, day shift, some weekends (no off-shifts/holidays/overtime) Rate: $16.35/hour Requirements:

The vast majority of assignments will be in Medical and Surgical subspecialty units, which can include, Cardiac/Cardiac Surgery, Oncology, Telemetry, Neurology/Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Transplant, Bariatrics, Respiratory, Renal, etc There will be limited availability in Critical Care, ED and Perioperative. There will be very limited availability in Pediatrics and Obstetrics Student Nurses will be assigned to their specified unit the first week of the program. SUMMARY The Student Nurse Intern (SNI) is defined as a nursing student who is currently enrolled in an accredited BSN School/Department of Nursing Program. The student nurse has successfully completed their school 's Fundamental Nursing Skills Laboratory and is currently enrolled in or has completed at least one semester of relevant Clinical practicum in their School/Department of Nursing Program. Under the direction of the Registered Nurse the Student Nurse Intern will perform unlicensed clinical skills and provide environmental support to the unit. Students will NOT prepare or administer any medications, prepare, initiate or administer any IV or arterial therapy, prepare or administer blood or blood components, or accept physician or LIP orders. Students will work with RN preceptor/mentor on all designated activities. Patient and family centered care (PFCC) at YNHH is demonstrated by working with patients and their families based on the 4 principles of PFCC: participation, dignity and respect, information sharing, and collaboration. This includes providing service excellence by creating a great "First Impression" by demonstrating exemplary customer service skills for all customer groups including patients, families/friends, physicians, staff and support department personnel. Nursing Process: Practices within the Patient and Family Centered Care (PFCC) Model and applies nursing process under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
Provides patient/family education as assigned and observed by the RN (i.e. strict intake and output, etc.). Identifies and sets priorities regarding patient needs under direct supervision of RN. Organizes and provides care based on priority needs under direct supervision of RN Patient Population: Demonstrates an increased level of clinical competence and clinical judgment by relating nursing theory to practice. Collaborates with RN regarding the following:
Procedures and Therapies: Provides direct nursing care and performs clinical nursing skills under the supervision of the Registered Nurse.
Leadership: Refines communication skills with patients, families and multi-disciplinary health team members, develops professional relationships and demonstrates increased professional accountability.
5 1. Interacts effectively and constructively with nursing staff members to ensure a positive work environment. Communicates in a professional manner to colleagues and works toward resolution of issues and concerns. Collaborates to assist in unit activities as needed. Seeks assistance/supervision appropriately. Accepts direction and feedback constructively. Actively seeks new clinical learning opportunities. Participates in unit based staff meetings and educational initiatives . Qualifications REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION (number of years and type required to perform the position duties): The Student Nurse Intern (SNI) is defined as a nursing student who is currently enrolled in an accredited RN School/ Department of Nursing program. EXPERIENCE (number of years and type required to meet an acceptable level of performance): The SNI has successfully completed their schools' Fundamental Nursing Skills Laboratory and is currently enrolled in or has completed at least one semester of relevant clinical practicum in the School of Nursing program. SPECIAL SKILLS: ACCOUNTABILITY (how this position is held accountable for such as goals achievement, budget adherence, or other areas of accountability): Work in a casual status position and assigned to work with a Registered Nurse to provide patient care. The ultimate responsibility for patient care is the responsibility of the Registered Nurse. Utilizes and manages material resources in a cost-effective manner. COMPLEXITY (describe planning, problem solving, decision making, creative activity, or other special factors inherent in the responsibilities of this position): In personal and job-related decisions and actions, consistently demonstrates the values of integrity (doing the right thing), patient-centered (putting patients and families first), respect (valuing all people and embracing all differences), accountability (being responsible and taking action), and compassion (being empathetic). The SNA will perform clinical skills and assist with the nursing plan of care under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse.
